That is certainly a different version! A friend and I used to play that as an acoustic duo and morph into Würm from Starship Trooper.

Well, it was an honest opinion.

Unfortunately, right now I don't own a Ric bass.

As someone who played the original version -- note for note (on a Ric bass) -- three nights a week for 15 years, I found this version very refreshing.

Had to throw this story in...

We added this song to our set as we planned our first little tour. The idea being it would be a good closing number, and as is common during just about any rock show people love to yell out "Freebird!", so we would be ready for them .My son, while he basically created the arrangement was nervous because he felt some folk might feel he was destroying a song that is an anthem for many.

So.....Here we are in Mill Spring NC playing to a group of about 25 kids, plus the owner of the venue(basically a huge garage where kids came to play x-box, playstation and the like,,,while others skateboarded outside), and a few others. We play our set, and close with the song. A few kids came up to us and tell us that they liked our set, especially Freebird. The owner with a real serious face says to us "Wait there about 5 minutes...don't move!" . Now my kid starts to get nervous because of his prediction that it would anger them. I start making jokes like "When he comes back, I'm leveling him with my bass, and we run for it".

Next thing we know, we see siren lights outside...and then all of us get nervous...Turns out the owner called his buddies who were working an EMS station close by. He brings them in and says..."That was the best version of Freebird I ever heard in my life!, play that again!". Our guitarist, always one to tempt fate responded "Did you ever hear the version on Lynard Skynyrd's live album? That's pretty good too!". Oh boy!

Anyway..we played the song again for his friends, packed and left for the next town. Scalps in tact

We'll have a TV studio arrangement of that video out in a couple of weeks (along with most of the rest of our set). I think it will be better received without all the promotional interruptions.
