Byrd Box Compressor?

Post by drumbob »

I was leafing through a new magazine called Making Music in my chiropractor's office Saturday and there was a little piece about a new compressor called the Byrd Box. Anybody know anything about it? I'm not planning on dumping my Janglebox, I love it. Just curious about this new stompbox.

Hi, all:

I just spoke with the sales manager of the company. He told me that Roger McGuinn was given a "Byrdbox" about a week ago to test drive!!! I just e-mailed Roger to ask his opinion. Hopefully, he'll reply to this one!!!

I LOVE my Janglebox-- but, I have to admit that I am always intrigued with this sort of thing! :D

P.S. The guy told me that it would retail for about $220!!!!!!

I though there was some mention of this ByrdBox compressor here, or on another RRF thread, a couple of months back... maybe around the time of NAMM, and I thought somebody mentioned that Byrdbox was/were supposed to be a cheaper-priced, (made in Asia) equivalent, to compete on pricing  againt the U.S. made Janglebox.

But if not here, it could have been on some other gear forum I was browsing....

But if its lisitng for $220 -- then its not competing very much on price :P

Does anyone happen to know what compressor was used on the original recordings for McGuinn's 12-string tracks??

I asked Roger once, and he had no idea...

I can get really close with an RCA BA-6A, and for all I know, it might be what was used back in the day too....

I don't know why - but I seem to remember reading it was a Fairchild compressor that they used in the studio back then?

Now that you mention it, that sounds familiar.

$199.95 here: http://www.tri-tones.net/p-1812-whirlwi ... essor.aspx

I'm tempted to buy one just because of the way the pedal looks! :D

Did you ever get a reply? I'm trying to decide what to do... get a Janglebox, or get a Byrdbox, or stick with my two Boss CS-3s.

With Janglebox you have to subdivide it with two options -- the Original or the new JB2 :)

It looks pretty cool. The housing is the same color as the old 'Chevy Orange' engine blocks...

In fact, I had the prototype in my hands last Saturday....... 8)
