The Register here would likely prevent any scammer from claiming a Ric was stolen. If your Ric is in the Register with its serial, its history here tied to you as owner would prove the alleged "victim" to be a con artist.

If the guy was concerned about the Rick being a fake he would have known for sure once he saw it in person. I think he was phishing since he didn't really seem to be interested in coming over and playing it, he just wanted that number.

I agree. Jason was completely open about the instrument and offering access to it before hand. IF the guy was legit and owned many "Rickys" he would have made an appointment to see the guitar and decide for himself. Good instincts Jdog.

Dawg, I've never seen one made in China that would fool anyone who's done their Rick homework. Of course, that includes you!

I'm sure there are some luthier-built counterfeits that could fool nearly anyone, though.

It's just plain common sense to leave out the last 2-3 digits in the number when having a discussion with anyone other than the Ric factory, or the final purchaser.

The year code is obviously distinct, the week...OK, but beyond that what does a set of metal stamp numbers and a chrome blank cost nowadays.

The factory has OTHER ways of identifying product, just to protect itself against unauthorized "squierization".

You wouldn't freely offer the security code on the back of your credit card in just any transaction would you?

I actually had to crawl in there on Monday to buy a music stand. A guy showed me two models on the floor, one lightweight, one heavy duty; both black. I bought the lightweight one, got home, opened up the box, it was chrome.

While the prospective buyer's behaviour in this case does seem strange (and I would love to know his real agenda), I have never believed, and do not currently believe that the serial number of any of my guitars requires any special secrecy.

All my registered Ricks have had the full serial numbers provided, and I see no reason not to provide the serial numbers of any future Ricks that I register.

RIC is the only entity who can verify whether a number matches their records, and from what we all know, they have more important things to do - like build guitars. For this reason, knowing a serial number is of no use to anyone except Rickenbacker employees, and even then, it's of little use. If we are talking about forgeries, it would actually make more sense to use a serial number that didn't really exist, rather than use a number that may be traced to an existing guitar. Even if someone had the mistaken idea that a real serial number is some kind of advantage, they could find these in countless eBay auctions or GBase listings without having to personally email JDog!

I just can't see why people care, a Rickenbacker serial number is not a credit card number or password of any kind. Knowing one, or many does not allow you any special privileges...

Continuing the OT, there's an option on YouTube to play a loop of obnoxious vuvuzela noise over whatever video you happen to be watching. Look for the soccer ball icon next to the "quality" setting.
