Re: Japanese RM1999's re-issues
Does the RM1999 sound any different than a C64? Or are they the same exact electronics, PUs, etc?
Re: Japanese RM1999's re-issues
I agree, it is a nice bass but other than as cosmetic platic difference, nothing different imo than a V63 or C64 for that matter which although I own both felt they are overpriced too, electronically its the same axe, another reason I didnt go after the 75th anni. 4003 in 2006 but did buy an 06 midblu 4003, other than color or plastic cosmetic difference, there was no difference in sound or playability, and the anni didnt come with a vintage pick up or special case, but paid less than half the price of the anni for my midblu 4003 new, I dont get caught up in the hype and overpay for something that comes off as different but the harsh reality is that it is not, but thats just me..s4001 wrote:While they're great basses and I RAS over them hard - 5K is too painful for my blood.

I, like EVERYONE else, drools over the idea of having an RM1999.
I consider myself EXTREMELY lucky to own a V63---Especially since I play lefty.
Since I know I'll NEVER find a lefty C64, or one of these RM's........I am SO glad to hear that ALL of these basses are really no different from each other.
PLUS, my V63 cost me a fortune as it was........purchasing one of these?????? FUGGETTABOUTIT!!!!!!!

Lefty4003S8 dont get me wrong, im not dissing the 1999, its an awe some bass, but owning a V63 and C64, I have no need to pay the outragous price for something where the only real difference is a little plastic thumb rest, I live very close to POTR and could easily have purchased that bass as well, but couldnt see what justfies the the price..other than the color, my V63 is jetglo, but my C64 is fireglo and the only difference there is the reverse headstock on the C64..

Hey Ricaddic,
No No No......I was not thinking you were "Dissing" the RM re-issue, DON'T worry
And believe me, if I HAD the coin I'd be trying to purchase one. Of course I don't think I could find a Lefty version.
As far as I'm concerned, my V63 IS a re-issue of the RM. Only difference is my V63 is Mapleglo.

Re: Japanese RM1999's re-issues
Extremely cool bass, that Rick RM1999!
Still, I already have a 2009 Rick C64 in FG, and other than the thumb rest and "correct" headstock, seems to be the exact same bass. For me, the thumb rest would probably get in the way and have to be removed, the way I play with a pick. IF the RM1999 had been readily available, I may have bought one. But since the C64 was easy to obtain, and I would probably have to wait decades to get a RM1999, I am quite happy with my purchase.
Does anyone know if these latest RM1999 basses have the two piece neck? My C64 does, I really like it.

Re: Japanese RM1999's re-issues
I too think that a RM1999 is the ultimate but the cost is just too much for me. At the moment, even a used V63 or c64 is beyond my budget. I realize there are quite a few differences but my '89 4003s gives me the two main cosmetic features that I really want; dot inlays and a contoured body. It's MapleGlo so I sure miss the contrasting headstock wings but it has just enough of a vintage feel at a bargain price. And oh that late '80's neck! Nice and thin!
Re: Japanese RM1999's re-issues
One huge difference in the late 80's necks that I've never seen discussed here is that the fretboard is narrower where it meets the body than on newer basses. The cutaways aren't quite as deep as on the newer basses either, which also makes the neck stronger where it meets the body and less prone to moving due to the route for the neck pickup.

Re: Japanese RM1999's re-issues
Yup. The "fat horns" are good! My '89 S has the most stable neck of any Ric bass I've encountered, and my '93 S/8 has no issues either.aceonbass wrote:One huge difference in the late 80's necks that I've never seen discussed here is that the fretboard is narrower where it meets the body than on newer basses. Re: Japanese RM1999's re-issues
Not directly relevant, but here's a comparison shot of a '93 next to an '04 (for body-horn comparison):

And actually, the 4003 on the right was made for the Japanese market as well.

The price just keeps coming down. No surprise they haven't sold out.
