A Phish Tail (no relation)

Post by walker »

Back in the late 90's, I lived in Seattle, had pretty long hair, and did the music thing playing bass in various bands. I got bored with the long-hair, so a friend of mine told me I should dread it. I figured "Why not?" If it gets messed up or I just don't like it, I can always shear it off, which was the original plan 'A' anyway. So she helped me along with the dreading process, and suddenly, I became: 'One Of Those!' You know, those people who you can tell just by looking at them that they love Reggae music and the Grateful Dead. And we smoke pot, of course - that's also a given. However, truth be known (hope I'm not bursting anyone's bubble,) but I DON'T smoke pot. Haven't touched it in YEARS. Not that I'm opposed to the stuff, I just haven't been in that mode for a long time.

I'm also not a huge fan of Reggae music. Don't get me wrong - I recognize that there's some great stuff out there, it's just the kind of thing that: a little bit goes a LONG way for me. I can hear about three Reggae songs a year, and I'm good. And The Dead - never been a fan. I have no appreciation for them on any level whatsoever, except that 'Cherry Garcia' is a great flavor.

So what does any of this have to do with Chris Squire? Hang on - I'm getting there.

One day I was making the rounds on my pizza delivery job when some random guy from across the street shouted: "HEY!" (which, incidentally, these are my favorite kind of people - the kind that know instinctively that it's perfectly acceptable behavior to bust in on someone else's otherwise unencumbered life path with some vulgar comment or unsolicited side-raling jabber. If you're one of these people, PLEASE approach me! I can guarantee that I have nothing better to do than hear what's on your mind at any knee-jerk impulse moment. As a matter of fact, I find your every thought to be fascinating!)

Enyhu - this guy whom I'd never seen in my life says: "Did you hear that FISH broke up?" and proceeded to expound upon the subject while I glazed over in a state of confusion and ponder. It wasn't until much later that I learned that he had actually said 'PHISH' not 'FISH', and that the former was a band riding popularity in the same ilk as The Grateful Dead. But at that moment on the street, the predominant thought that popped into my head while embracing the concept of FISH breaking up was "Gee... that's too bad. I wonder what upset the old boy."

That's it. Yes, you came this far just for that. I regret nothing.

Great post Mark! I love it when you bust in on my otherwise unencumbered life path with some vulgar comment or unsolicited side-raling jabber.

Seriously, great post. :D

And I confess to owning and listening to a couple Phish cds. I agree on the Dead and reggae too. No harm meant to anyone. Interestingly, I have lately (about 3 months ago) considered growing my hair out to have dreads and get a diamond stud for the ear. The Mrs. nixed both. No imagination!

...sounds like you're not leaving Big Sky, eh? Or is it Idaho that has the best fly fishing?

You've got some potential Dr. Seuss brewing there, Jim.
