anyone use the Hipstamatic app for iPhone?

Post by hieronymous »

There's a relatively new camera app for the iPhone, called the Hipstamatic. It's kind of fun - the pictures come out like they were taken on an old '60s or '70s camera - you can select different lenses, flashes, and films. It's fun - I've taken a bunch of pictures of my cat with it, and one of my 4001:

I like this picture because instead of going for the clarity and details like we usually do, it's more atmospheric. I'll try and take some more with some different lens/film combinations - in the meantime, anyone else using this app?

Vey cool, I definitely want to see different examples, not that it will sway me to buy an iPhone, let a lone, any cell phone, for the time being!

This image looks like an old, faded to magenta, color print with lots of flare from strong backlighting. 8)

Oh come on Jeff! Time to trash all that old, obsolete, camera junk you've got and replace it with a cell phone! And hey, you can even call someone and send 'em your latest masterpiece as soon as you've taken it!

Cool picture though, neat effect. Try out a few more and post 'em!

Your wish is my command! Here are some more:

The John S lens with Blanko film:

Kaimal Mark II lens with Ina's 1969 film:

Roboto Glitter lens with Float film:

Same thing but with Berry Pop flash:

I hope I didn't go too nuts! (I actually took a lot more) But it was fun to experiment with the different lenses and film in a more organized fashion. It comes with three sets, and you can buy more.

This is very cool, actually. Nice to see a trend towards retro looks that are not glamourized, so to speak.

Nicely put! I think it's based off of an actual inexpensive camera they developed back in the '70s, if you believe the marketing.

I got inspired after taking the pictures and recorded a piece of music and made a cheesy slide show with iMovie to go along with the pics I took:

Fun!

This was one of the very first apps I put on my iPhone after I read about it on Gizmodo.

There's a fun "photo lab" application that allows you to post-process any photo in your iPhone's photo library (including, of course, those taken with the Hipstamatic app). It's called Swanko Lab, and besides having amusing background sound effects, the results can be very entertaining and possibly useful.

The two photos below were transferred from my Sony digital camera to my iPhone so I could process them via Swanko Lab, then transferred to my laptop so I could post them here. Note that they were NOT taken with Hipstamatic, but the post-processing was via Swanko Lab.

Pretty cool! I wonder if they'll make a version for use on a regular computer...

Thanks for the heads-up Paul - looks like an interesting app. One thing I don't really like about the Hipstamatic is the "viewfinder" - it is not an accurate representation of what the camera is seeing, it only shows a portion. I guess it's supposed to be "retro" and all, but I kind of wish you could have a better idea of what you were taking a picture of.

I wish I had more of a chance to say hi on Saturday at BARC but I got there kind of late...

Thought I should post this pic here:

My friend CB took it with one of his Canon cameras - natural light in his beautiful house - I don't know, I just love this picture!

You thought you should post a pic taken with a Canon in a thread about an iPhone app? :|
Well, it is a nice photo but you could have made your own thread or posted it in the 'good lighting' thread.

It looks like the app is trying to mimic Lomo photography, which has become very popular. It's hit-and-miss, I would say. It makes cool photo's, but it's not really Lomo-style.
This presents a good example of Lomo with Photoshop.

Lomo "style" covers a lot of ground.

Not really, 'Lomography' referrs to pictures taken with a very specific small Russian camera, which has distinct traits like highly saturated colors, and shallow FOV, the center object is highlighted while the edges are darkened. There's a big difference between "old-timey" sepia toned images and Lomo.

Here's a quick example of putting a Lomo effect artifically onto the previously posted 4001 image.

it may have started that way but it has grown into a whole"anti-digital" sort of (r)evolution in photography. Check out the range of plastic "******" cameras available these days, Holga, and otherwise.
