Re: Amp Advice
There are lots of good and decent amps out there of all price ranges, I own and love Markbass, I have a little Mark Tube head with a 410HF cab and love it, now thats not a practice amp, but have tried thier smaller combo's and the are outstanding, but yes, they are not cheap pricewise, so with that, my suggestions would be, Markbass or Gernz-Benz, both very good but not cheap,, I also agree the Ampeg VR Micro stack is a great compact amp, I love mine, Ashdown mag series is very good and affordable, and acoustic makes a very good and affordable line, there is plenty out there worth going after, its just a matter of what suites your taste..
Re: Amp Advice
John, the GK MB115 is a go!
If I did not have the Minimark I would buy this.

Wow, for someone who never played bass seriously, you sure jumped in headfirst, all the way- nice score!johneek wrote:I sure would appreciate everyone's advice on a bass amp. I've never really played bass seriously, only messed around with it (as most guitar players do at one point or another) but finally decided to take the plunge. The JG 4003 I ordered has been shipped from the factory and should be "home" in a week or so.
What would you recommend as a "first" bass amp? I have played through an Ampeg BA115 and wasn't that impressed, at least in terms of volume, even at "jam" levels in the house. I obviously won't play out any at first, but wouldn't refuse an opportunity if it came up. I have been looking at the GK MB115, but after reading some threads on another bass forum, I wondered if the MB210 is something I should consider, given the fact that it seems to have plenty of power (more than I need now for sure) and the capability to plug in an extension cabinet.
Whatever I end up with will mostly be used for my personal practice and be available for friends who come over to play. Suggestions, council, and wisdom are all appreciated....
Re: Amp Advice
That's all the recommendation I need! Thanks Jeff...VERY much appreciated!!! I was seriously thinking about the MB210 because of the flexibility it offers for an extension cab, but most of the chatter on another bass oriented forum seems to indicate that while everyone really likes these amps, the bottom end starts to take over once the speakers break in, interestingly enough, more so than with the MB212. Not sure what might cause this...cabinet design? All of this can be cured with EQ, but no one has complained a whit about the MB115. That combined with Jeff's thumbs up makes my decision easy. The MB115 will be a great place to start. Will let you know what I think once everything gets up and running. Thanks everyone for your wisdom and encouragement....jps wrote:John, the GK MB115 is a go!If I did not have the Minimark I would buy this.
Re: Amp Advice
There were no MB 210 or MB 212 models available to compare but the EQ is nice and there is plenty of bottom end, I even rolled the bottom end off some to get it to sound more like the Minimark, so there is plenty of range on tap from the EQ to get you anything you'd likely need.
Re: Amp Advice
Thanks Jeffery...you rock!
Re: Amp Advice
Did you ever get a Jet City amp?
Re: Amp Advice
No...never did. Really would like to try one sometime.
Re: Amp Advice
Buy/build an SVT. Why make stops along the road to greatness?
Re: Amp Advice
Well, I thought I would again thank everyone for their advice, and let you know what I finally ended up with. As mentioned previously in this thread, I was going to get a GK MB115, and ordered one from MF only to discover it was on backorder. No problem, I got if for a good price and I could wait a week until it came in. That week led to a second week, and then a third. All this time I kept hearing people talk about Markbass. I knew they were good amps and had even played one at a GC a year or so ago, but they were more money than I wanted to spend....all that said, I kept looking and finally found this one for what I thought was a bargain. Couldn't pass it up...canceled my order with MF and the rest is history.
Much appreciated everyone....

Welcome to the world of ordering from MF and their delivery promises.
Congrats, John. Now you need a mustard-yellow pickguard!

...and inlays and binding....It would be (no pun intended) the Bumble Bee Bass....
Re: Amp Advice
I recently played a gig at a county fair and no matter how good or not any act's bass amp was, the sound men destroyed the tone of all of the bassists. And had the kick drums too loud as well.
Re: Amp Advice
So there's no hope for me?
