I agree he's excellent, and his voice is very Beatle-ish.... on this one sounds a lot like Harrison.
But you're saying Phil Keaggy a better guitarist than Eric Clapton?

just another opinion guys, but I never thought Eric Clapton was so hot a guitarist, certainly not as hot as Jimi Page, Jeff Beck, or Jimi Hendrix.

If it is true that Eric played the solo in George Harrison's "Something", then that solo is the only time I think he played a fantastic unforgettable solo. During his days with Cream I wasn't inspired by Eric's playing. Blind Faith was more inspiring to me but only music-wise, the songs were fabulous.

I think Eric Clapton is VERY OVER-rated. He is a very good song writer, however his solos sound very contrived and repetitive. They call him a blues man, however he couldn't carry Stevie Ray Vaughan's hat. IMO Stevie was the best blues player ever. He also belongs on a short list of Greatest of All Time. Clapton has admitted this in numerous interviews. Hendrix IMO could be the greatest God-given talent ever to play six strings. He was a GAME-CHANGER! The only other person who gets that credit is Eddie Van Halen. Eddie was another GAME-CHANGER. When you realize that the first VH record came out in EARLY 1978, in the height of disco, it is stunning! Now Page.... Jimmy Page could be one of the best guitarists ever. He may be the best arranger/producer/guitarist ever. When I first heard the Dazed and Confused solo (it remains my favorite solo ever) it was totally over for me. Rushed out to get a sunburst Les Paul (EPIPHONE) and tried to goose-step around like Jimmy. The Heartbreaker solo (another GAME-CHANGER) has also influenced countless guitarists. If fact, Eddie Van Halen credited the Heartbreaker solo to him developing his “tapping” technique. Unfortunately Jimmy has declined terribly over the years. His missing of notes during live shows has been evident since the late 70’s. It has gotten worse and worse. For a ZEP-HEAD like myself, I was horrified to see clips of the recent “o2” show. Wretched is not strong enough to express my feelings. However Page has sobered up and looks healthier than he ever has. For that I’m very happy for him, and it deserves my total respect and admiration. “It May Get Loud” was a brilliant film. If anyone hasn’t seen it, it’s a must watch.

Agreed 100% on Clapton. Good; certainly not great.

BTW, it was Harrison's While My Guitar Gently Weeps he played lead on, but you probably knew that and just had "Something" else on your mind.

And I agree too that Blind Faith was Clapton's best work; because of the overall musicality of it - great songs, as you say.

Clapton was called "god" ?? you kiddin!! in any case Jimi Hendrix was "god", and second to Hendrix, Jimi Page, at least in Rock. I will respect everybody's opinions about Van Halen, but I was never influenced by his playing because it really wasn't playing, it was more like "tapping". There was a famous progressive jazz Bass Player who invented this tapping business before Eddie, I forget his name, a young cat.

Jeff Beck took another road and went into the "progressive" realm, but he has some incredible "guitaristics" that I've yet to hear anybody else emulate.

yes I agree that Jimi Page lost it at some point but you know, by then he had enough money to get away with it.
his work on Led Zeppelyn's albums is still amazing. I am still moved by "Babe I'm gonna leave you", and that's just an acoustic and a steel guitar. The solo in "Whole Lotta Love" and "Stairway to Heaven" is for me the summit of Rock Guitar.

For me, "Voodoo Child (Slight Return) would be the summit for rock guitar. Like I said, for blues guitarists, Clapton isn't half the player Stevie Ray Vaughan is. Van Halen, even if he isn't your cup of tea, cannot be denied his place as one of the VERY select few who changed the face of guitar.
