Very cool. I don't think I've ever seen this. Too bad this album wasn't better. I can't quite put my finger on why it wasn't. I listen to it every now and again, but it never seems to work past one listen before it goes back on the shelf.

I remember the joke at the time that it was shipped Platinum and returned gold. Harsh, but probably true.

Good to see the 4001S. Most pictures of that time show the Yamaha and his Casino.

I think this album was his last truly consistent one. I felt Venus and Mars was consciously trying to replicate Band on the Run, Speed of Sound was too mellow and London Town had many embarassing tunes. With Back to the Egg he had great tunes (listen to 'Arrow Through Me' again- Stevie should cover that tune!) a real edge and a rocking band.
Flowers in the Dirt came close, but I really believe this to be one of his best. The only albums I like more are Ram and Band on the Run (and McCartney is in the running).

Thanks for posting, Richard. Good stuff.

And Chuck; well put. I would choose Ram, Band on the Run and McCartney as his best, in that order. To me, Ram is one of the best rock albums of all time.
Can we have everything louder than everything else?

I go back and forth on which are my favorites, but Tug of War and Flaming Pie would rank high than Back to the Egg in my book. Tug of War, IMO is a much more polished version of London Town. To me, London Town wasn't taken serious. Again, just my opinion.

Just to add, I think Back to the Egg is Paul's finest VOCAL performance on record.

Check this one out, Rick. This had to be one of the last times this bass made a public appearance.

Does anybody remember the "making of" My Brave Face video? It featured Paul and the 4001. He was actually playing it very loud, had a ****sy tone I've never heard used before. The video quickly disappeared.

Yep. That was in the "Put it There" documentary for the making of "Flowers in the Dirt". But that really wasn't a public appearance.

Gotta chime in on Ram......I too think it's the best (with McCartney a close second). But Back To The Egg is excellent and very underrated but what do I know, I also really like McCartney II!
PS Electric Arguments would be my vote for his best since Ram. Now that's going out on a limb! :)
And yeah, do I ever miss seeing the 4001s in use!
