Pink Floyd's Paintbox

Post by beefandbones »

So I was listening to a CD I have of early Pink Floyd singles (Barrett era, my fave) and the last song is a Rick Wright composition called Paintbox. It's really different from the Syd songs, but what really struck me about it is Roger's bass sound. So Rickenbacker. It's a really McCartney influenced sound and bass line.

Piper at the Gates of Dawn or the other singles don't have such an obvious Rick bass sound to them. My Floyd collection skips from Piper to Meddle - any other great Rick sounds from Roger out there?

"The Gnome" off of "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" has some cool higher register Rickenbacker bass. "See Emily Play" has a cool identifiable Rick sound with Roger's trademark octave sweeps.

"Saucerful of Secrets", which came after Piper, has "See-Saw" and "Remember a Day", that have a decent Rick sound. Interestingly they're both Rick Wright compositions too.

Great stuff!

I love The Pink Floyd, I have a cool video "The Pink Floyd"-London '67", that has some live and studio footage with Rog play his Ric somewhat "unorthodoxly".

Mathilda Mother has a nice '60s rick tone, too.

How could I forgot about that one?! It sure does - right from the first note.

Being a relative late comer to Pink Floyd, when I first heard Piper I thought Roger was playing a Precision, and although I learned shortly after that it was a Rick, my mind always hears 'Precision' on that album. Trying to listen to it with clean ears, you're right - especially Mathilda Mother has a great Rick sound!

Man I am a Yes fan and then it's all Floyd for me? I have not heard a lot of this earlier stuff? Gotta get on the bay and buy up some old Pinksters cd's and have a listen! Randy
