Been Gone So Long...

...or so it seems. I got the opportunity to team teach two week long workshops at the Lawrence Arts Center. These were for kids about to enter 6th through 9th grade this fall. The morning session was dedicated to song writing. And there really were some gifted young song writers in the class. In fact I'm still humming some of the songs they created.

The afternoon session was an introduction to jamming, and teaching them a few basic, and well known folk songs. We taught Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land" as well as "Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho" and my favorite, "The Fox."

Yeah, it really was fun. I didn't quite have time to finish up my little report. For part of the afternoon program we brought in guest musicians to introduce the kids to other styles of folk music, or to demo specific playing styles, etc. On Monday, we brought in one of my bandmates from Getty Township to discuss blues harp playing.

The gentleman in the ball cap in the right of the photo is a banjo player from another band in town. He was talking about clawhammer style playing, sang some songs, and I backed him up on an instrumental tune or two on guitar.
