The neck is a 3001 neck, not a 3000 neck. The tailpiece and tuners are aftermarket and not RIC parts either, which is a shame. Since it is a factory neck, I don't think it could be considered infringing, but I'm sure we'll find out. It certainly is better looking that a 4005 though. If the neck weren't from RIC, I'm sure the auction would have already been pulled. Just because RIC doesn't make an instrument with the "right" combination of RIC trademarked features doesn't mean someone else can, even as a "one off".
It's relisted as a '74 Rickenbacker neck with TRC. Everything else in the picture is included for free. Clever, in an annoying sort of way. I must admit though, that traitor that I might be, I really like it. If it was right-handed, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
"Dane, here's the legal status on this Bass and the auction. It is listed as a Factory Rick neck only and fitted to a custom made body. No violations or misrepresentations are being made. The Bass was a project started 2 years ago for a man who had to cancel this because he was diagnosed with cancer. Where do people get off thinking that someone can't take a guitar and modify it? Would Ford Motor Co. sue people for taking a car and turning it into a hot rod with new parts, engine and lights and retaining the Ford logo. I even had John Hall tell me more than 2 years ago that if I had 50% of the substrate I could build anything I want to. That was at the time I built a 360F with the original parts from John Pepper. I believe John Hall is a decent honest person who understands as I do that as long as I don't build and advertise replica copies then sell them to the general public there will be no problems. This particular 3301 style Bass is put together with an original neck, that's how it is worded and is being offered because that's what it truely is. I don't need to build and sell knock-offs to make my way through life. At this time I will be 63 yrs. old soon and honestly I'm trying to retire. I've had some serious health issues over the last 4 yrs. and it's time to scale down. I will still do custom work on a limited basis, entirely Rickenbackers because that is what I do best. Dane you have my permission to post any part or all of this on the RRF or even forward this to John Hall himself if you'd like. IMO there are quite a few people on the RICK Forums that try to be way to protective of the Rickenbacker legacy. They are great guitars, but we don't need to bow down and pray to them. A lot of what I do John Hall knows about, he's seen pictures and heard the stories. I believe he has better things to do than worry about me causing his business problems." Dale
I agree 100% with Dale on this, and I'll ad that if this were one of RIC's one off basses on Ebay, it would hit $4000.00 easily....and probably not get gigged any more than the last one of their basses that sold on Ebay.
I think the biggest problem with the first listing is that it implied that it was a Rickenbacker bass. The description clearly stated what it was, but the title was a tad misleading. I actually think it's pretty cool, but being a lefty, not of much use to me.
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...
My name is James, this is my 1st post here. I belong to several other forums and long ago the Vox Talks forum. I'm a lefty bassist who enjoys playing everything from Beatles to Jazz. I also play guitar, keyboards and a little on the drums. I was following the Ebay auction until it was canceled. Since i am a lefty i had an interest in the bass. I read the posting and description carefully noting that it clearly described it as being an original 1974 Rickenbacker factory neck mounted on a custom made body built in his shop using parts that appeared to be 1st rate. I saw or read nothing misleading implying that it was anything else but a project using an old factory neck. I also have to agree with aceonbass above 100 percent. I don't see any difference with taking a Fender P-bass neck and mounting it on a home made fender style body. If i sound concerned or disappointed i am. This was a great looking bass much like the one that Howie Epstein had built except a lefty. I was ready to bid hoping to buy this for my personal use. I'll keep on searching for another and maybe one day the Rickenbacker company will make one like this. It has such a beautiful design and shape. Maybe it's time to add to the stable a new type of bass, afterall the 4001 has been around for 50 years.
