I'm out in Stony Plain, so pretty close by. I grew up in Edmonton in the Jasper Place/West Meadowlark area.

Hi kelly,

Guitar or bass or both? Musical influences? I am a big Yes/Rush guy. I play both guitar and bass but prefer the bass. What do you have for RIC's?

here are mine

I'm in Malta, MT, only about 600 miles away, which is pretty close by Montana standards...

But only for another month or so...

Hey Brian,

I'm a guitar person, although I did own a 4003 for a while but I didn't play it very often so I traded it for another guitar. Musically I'm not a prog rock guy, although as a good Canadian I do have a couple of Rush albums, and always enjoyed Alex Lifeson's guest appearances on Trailer Park Boys. A friend of mine won tickets to see Yes when I was in high school (around 1983 maybe) so I went with him - it was the worst thing I've ever seen, and I even fell asleep for part of the concert. It was very Spinal Tap-ish as they were recording the concert for a video and so few people were there they asked everyone to move into the lower bowl of the Coliseum so it would look like it was a full house. Sorry to tell you that! On a happier Yes-related note I very much enjoyed Jon Anderson's singing on Gowan's "Midnight Desires" single, and of course "The Friends of Mr. Cairo" is something I listen to once in a blue moon!

My musical influences started with my Dad's love of music so a lot of stuff from the 50's was playing in the house growing up - Buddy Holly, Dean Martin, Marty Robbins and a lot of Doo Wop and country music. From there it was just chronological really - lots of 60's stuff like the Beatles and Who. I didn't really care for much of the stuff in the 70's although I really liked Abba and Blue Oyster Cult, then the post-punk era started. My earliest Rickenbacker love started with George Harrison and Pete Townsend then bands like The Jam and The Church were huge for me. Most of my influences all date from 1979 onward and I liked a lot of bands from Australia as well, and I'm off to see Crowded House at the Jubilee next week despite the stunning mediocrity of their newest release. These days I have a tough time finding new stuff that stands out for me - my favourite band of the past 15 years is Weezer and virtually no one else.

I've owned about a dozen Rickenbackers over the past 15 years but haven't bonded well with them. Its tough because I absolutely love how they look and the sounds other people can get from them but I really struggle with the playability of them - they're plinky, if you know what I mean. I guess its the small frets and the lacquered fingerboard. If I were to pick one brand of guitar that I like playing more than others it would probably be Gibson - I like the feel of their guitars the best. Anyway I've tried pretty much every Rickenbacker model there is, even splurging on a 660/12 and a 381/6 at one time. I hadn't kept any of them until I came across a new 330/12 a few months ago that really worked for me, so I'm keeping that one.

Its great to see another forum member is nearby - even you CJJ. 600 miles isn't that far to a Canadian as we consider anything less than a 12-hour drive to be pretty close by!

Hi Kelly,

LOL, I was at that concert you mentioned and I think I saw you sleeping!!! Just kidding . To each their own. I admire your tenacity in trying to find a RIC that was right for you. I also know what you mean about Plinky. They definitely are a "Niche" guitar. Even the basses are not as versatile for certain types of music as say a fender would be. I am familair with most of the bands you mentioned. I myself find very little new stuff to my liking as well. Music just isnt as adventurous as it used to be and for that I blame the "idol" shows and the hip hop/rap community.

John Mayer is one artist that i find my self liking although personally I think he isnt all that likeable as a human. He needs a little more humility if you ask me but his skills are undeniable as a singer and a player. I am also blown away by keith urban. Not much of a country guy as a rule, but that guy can flat out play. Recently one of the guitar players from my band turned me onto a band called "tool". Very good group, very very tight. Are you playing with anyone?

Hey CJJ what happens in a month?

Sold the farm and have to be out by the end of Sept. We bought a tiny little 20 acre place in South Western Montana, in the Bitterroot Valley. Already made 3 trips with 2 trucks pulling 35ft trailers... Man, I've got WAY too much stuff...

I can't stand John Mayer, never could. Keith Urban is amazing though - I saw him live about 3 years ago and it was a great concert. I don't play with other people, do you?

I do. In a band called "Everythings Jake" great bunch of guys who have the whole band thing in the proper persepctive. Do you not play with others by choice or are you just between bands

I've only ever played with friends - I played drums with some friends back in the mid-90s and we played some parties, then just getting together for fun after that for a few years. Most of my musical buddies moved away or had children and so on, so I just play to amuse myself. The last thing I did was play with 2 fellow teachers at the high school I was teaching at about 2 years back - we opened the school's Battle of the Bands competition but we weren't competing. It was a lot of fun. I'd like to play more with other people but its tough when you're middle-aged and not that motivated! I'm a tough bandmate though - I'm very opinionated about music and there are things I'll flat out refuse to play.
