Dr Z Amps
Does anyone have a Dr Z amp? I was doing some research on Trainwreck Amps, which led me to Dr Z (he's making a Z wreck, using some of the Trainwreck designs). Anyway, they have a few models I'm interested in and was wondering if anyone has one and what their thoughts are. Specifically the Z28 model ... or anything really.
Thanks,
Jim
Thanks,

Re: Dr Z Amps
I don't own one but have played through a couple different models at my local Dr. Z dealer. Going by my limited trials and that of a great guitarist friend of mine, go for it!
Not to mention the tons of glowing reviews on Dr. Z amps.
Re: Dr Z Amps
Not played one, but never heard anything but glowing praise....
Brad Paisley is a huge Dr. Z fan....

Re: Dr Z Amps
I recall reading somewhere that Joe Walsh had some input in to the sound of one of the models and stated it was "Rickenbacker friendly".
Expect nothing and you'll never be disappointed (and I mean that in an optimistic way).

Willcutt always has a bunch in stock at their boutique shop. I tried and nearly bought the 'Stang Ray'. It was close to perfect.
Dr. Z makes amazing amps.
Just wish they had better names!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Dr Z Amps
I've always been curious about these amps, especially the Maz18 and the Monza. Tone wise, are they closer to Fender/Marshall or Vox?
Re: Dr Z Amps
Welcome Andrea! Good to have you aboard.
Steve....It really depends on the model. They have a lot of EL84 based amps that can sound a lot like a Vox, but there are 6L6 and EL34 based amps too. Their website is pretty descriptive and has some demos of the models....

I listened to a lot of clips on their site - the Stangray was definitely my favourite!
Re: Dr Z Amps
I have a friend who has a half a dozen or so Dr Z amps and swears by them. I've played my 360 through both his Maz 18 (NR) and Carmen Ghia. I like 'em, but want to see what a Monza sounds like with a Ric. Furthermore, there's a Mini Z waiting for me the next time I go up to Dallas.

Re: Dr Z Amps
I have one. It's a 2x12 combo Stingray. Yes, Stingray. I got one of the early ones before the good Dr. had to change the name a little.jwargowski wrote:Does anyone have a Dr Z amp?
Not to detract from this forum, but consider (if you haven't already done so) signing up at the Z-Forum. There's lots of info about the Z-28 over there... lots of sound files, too.

Looks like Dr Z is openly courting us. Check out the Z Wreck webpage.
... A 12 string Ric will be right at home for mid 60s Liverpool bliss. Once past 12:00 on the volume you can dial in excellent crunch all the way up to full blooming sustained drive sounds. Does the Z Wreck ROCK? YES!!! Does the Z Wreck TWANG? YES!!! ...

Re: Dr Z Amps
I have played a borrowed Prescription Jr & 2X12 cab, a Route 66 & 2X12 cab and a Stangray. I loved each and every one of them. All 3 had stunning tones when going direct using a 660/12, 620/6 and 350/6. The Prescription Jr and Stangray were extremely jangly when kept clean and have amazing touch and compression, fabulous with toaster equipped Ricks. The Route 66 is an out and out rock amp, and was most impressive with the Hi-gain equipped 620. All of these are really REALLY LOUD amps though. I got to try the Stangray with the Z Airbrake, and it was very impressive. No noticeable tone change when throttling back. A good option to get to a reasonable volume level at home.
There is at least one Dr. Z in my 2010 future. Whether the Pres Jr or the Z Wreck remains to be seen (or heard). I will have the opportunity to try a Z Wreck in November or December, coinciding with a new custom made guitars arrival. If it is as good as the hype, the Z Wreck would complete my 50th year celebration (custom Rick project, custom built Dingwall guitar, and a Dr. Z or two).
Hey, some guys buy sports cars or bikes for mid-life. I move in another direction...
