What happens when a guitar loses it's serial number?
What happens when a guitar that has already been registered changes hands but loses it's serial number along the way? Just curious because I bought a guitar without a serial number.I know what the serial number is because the the guitar is in the register and easily identified by the photos and I know the chain of custody for this guitar from posts in the forum by it's owners .
I wonder also what happens when the serial number is put on another guitar? I'm sure this happens from time to time and especially now with people parting out guitars on ebay,I was wondering how the register deals with these "custody issues" ?

Mitch: For the RRF Register we enter the serial number once we are sure that the research identifying it is sufficient. Thanks for your good question.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

This is the Guitar I mentioned. The wear patterns were so distinctive,it was easy to find in the register.I didn't even know that it was registered till I looked.

And for numbers that aren't already in the Register, but are found to be just a number plate being parted out, they get entered as "Butchered". If we can figure out what they originally went with, that gets entered along with the serial notation too...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

Ok thanks,I was wondering what will happen someday when someone tries to register their 425 with the bridge from my guitar.Maybe we can swap!

This is interesting for a topic as I know for a fact someone online is going to take off a real rick jackplate s/n, that he had added to a Ric copy, and sell it. Just inquired if I wanted to purchase it. Had been trying to sell his Ric copy that he'd misrepresented as a real Ric and was shut down doing that.

I read somewhere that a the serial number input jack plate 60's ended up on an early 80s Rick 320 or a fake 325 and the guy was trying to sell it on fleabay as a 60s 325
edit I guess I need to read the whole post

I was asked to authenticate a supposed '67 Jetglo 325 solidtop that was plainly a poorly modified 80's 320. The fact that the January '67 Jackplate was a dual one off a deluxe series instrument was one of the stupidest things about the whole deal. Nice new Philips head screws holding it on though.....
