Not a good day for 12-strings ...

JUst venting a little, folks!

When I went to tune the 370/12RM FG before practice today, the octave G string broke.

Fine, I'll just get another 12-er out ... ah, yes the 620/12 Turquoise. I open the case ... and it has a broken octave G string (it wasn't put in the case that way!).

O.K., let me get the 370/12v64 FG out ... so I tune it carefully and ... yep, the octave G string broke!

Grrrr ... O.K., let me try the 660/12TP JG. I again carefully tuned it up. Ah! I didn't break a string!

So we got through practicing and decided to go through "Set 1" a second time. During the next to last 12-string song, I don't remember when exactly ... yep, the octave G string on the 660/12TP JG broke while I was playing it.

I wonder if that's yet another reason why Roger McGuinn tunes to Eb. Maybe he got the T-shirt at some point over the years, also. Looks like you need to have a couple dozen backup high G's, Gary. Tom

Probably better odds to win the Lottery, than to go through that many 12-stringers in a single rehearsal ! Must have been the temperture or ambient humidity or something effecting the guitars.... Lucky you had a few 12-stringers on hand, to spare....

Are you using 8's? I use 10's.

Did they all break at the saddle? If so, check for a sharp edge on the saddle that could stress the string.

I vote for this. An 8 tuned to high "G" would be under less tension than a 10.
