Refinish for a vintage bass (3000)

I say "go for it" too, it's your bass so have it like you want it. If it drops value as a result then so what? Personally, if It was mine and I had to sell it later on, I'd rather have to sell it cheaper to someone who is actually going to play it than sell it for top dollar to a collector who will won't touch the thing other than to clean it..... and you will get collector/players who would give you a fair price for it anyway. IMHO

hey there,eden-chris squire obviously liked the aged offwhite look,and i adore old mellow-yellowed white basses in general (jazz bass,tbirds-yum) My 74 4000 is verging on bananna cream color,and i prefer that to the "appliance white" look- i think that this 3000 with the original finish and a tortoise pg would likely look awesome!

Actually, the (dark) tortise PG is going on the maple one, black for the white, although I thought about it. I did not want two tortise PG. You know, the white is pretty good on the front side, its a large part on the back and some of the sides that are brownish yellow. After review, I am going to try some things to clean it and for now no refinish. I am not selling anyway, I got two to play and thats what it is. It will allow me to save up for a full size Rick some day. Thanks again for the input.

I must say that my new aquisition Gfao smells like a pack of camels (both sorts).......(needs an emoticon of nose being held)..

I am going to try some things to clean it and for now no refinish.

Do a thorough search on this forum for cleaning as this is not your average kitchen or Fender/Gibson cleaning. Rickenbacker's have a special lacquer/paint/whatever the finish is called in the US (I'm from the EU). Cleaning it the right way will be rewarded with much more GLO and a longer life of the finish of your bass.

Not the only one.. my '75 4001 is also yellowing quite nicely.. as for the refin...hmmm how can I say this??? "Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo"

A funny (almost embarrassing) update on the color. Myself and Luthier friend were taking the pickguard off to replace the pickup, (back to stock) and saw that the color inside was a canary yellow. Leading me to believe that the bass was originally a yellow. The outside had turned a light creme with the cigarette brown (mostly on the back and edge). The creme was so uniform I thought it was white that had turned. I have never seen a yellow 3000, but then again I am not an expert. I am almost ready to show pics of both of them (3000) finished. Thanks for all the imput.
