Going for another one!

Post by weemac »

Well I could not call the topic "Going for the one" as for me "the one" is my Rm..
However I like to name my instruments with some sille memorable name I present...
"Going for another one!

It arrived today and is the bass pictured here: http://www.rickbeat.com/modelslibrary/4008/4008.htm

I pulled it to bits straight away and fitted a Horseshoe and a new treble knob.
The neck is very much like my 74 that I just sold (kind of big and round)

It dates from 82 and is more or less and early 4003 with a two piece neck and the reverse trussrods (which I feel is not the best design as it leaves the neck joint very weak) However the neck seems solid.

I fitted strings as close to Rickenbackers specs as I could find and loosened the truss rods to suit (it was strung up with Daddario traintracks...)

Its heavy, balances well and sounds Big!

I had a S.W. Heter signature in my 82 4001 that I used to own.

H'mm I can think of something I can do for the tube.... (not my usual sort of stuff though..)

I'm getting the setup finalised for now, I have noticed that the tuning changes depending if you lean foward or back a bit. The neck is solid but there is some flex in the neck joint. I will work to cure this. (I had this happen on my 74 4001 as well)
I find that it is a little like my RM in that it is not giving off it's best at practice volumes and needs to be turned up to really get it cracking..
My Waterstones seem to sound fine at any volume. And my Spira 8 string bass (which has wonderneck) is best not plugged in at all as it has EMGs...

It must be the nature of Toaster pickups that just get better when the volume goes up as they have such a complete sound...

Anyhow the 4008 (Gfao, thanks Jeffrey) and perhaps the RM will get used in the Polymack gig tommorow.
