Strap Locks?

Post by Grey »

Do any of you use Strap Locks on your Rics? I had a set on my SG and was sorely missing them on the Ric, but then I noticed that Pick of the Ricks has a drop-in replacement for vintage-style strap buttons which would mean I could add strap locks to the Ric without modifying it and whilst keeping the same basic visual asthetic. It says they are compatible with Schallers, which i've never used before.

I do.

This was one the first questions I asked of the forum.. ( what straplocks to use )

and indeed: Schallers work on the RIC, without having to do anything to the guitar!

I would so hate to have my RIC slip off a strap! .. it's well worth the few dollars.

I do have to dedicate a strap to the RIC ( not a problem ).. as my other guitars have Dunlop buttons/locks.. and I use a different strap for all the other guitars..

Yea, I was willing to let it go untill it slipped off the bottom strap button twice and it would have bounced around on the floor had I not grabbed it as quickly as I did. I doubt i'll ever move that fast again in my life.

Plus I already have seperate straps for the SG and my acoustics, with the strap position being on the horn with my Ric I have to tighten up the strap alot and it was just way too much of a pain to constantly re-adjust it.

I haven't felt the need to put straplocks on any of my guitars yet. The day may be coming....or not. I don't know.

I think it's an option that gives us peace of mind, at the very least. One less thing to go wrong is nice. Energetic performers come to them by necessity.

I've had them on some instruments that were in heavy use but for the first reason I mentioned. I don't recall that a strap has ever failed me. I try to use one strap with one guitar and not switch them around; maybe that keeps them fitting well. Ideally every guitar gets its own strap but I may have fallen off on that goal. A good strap is less likely to fail, too.

But only really one gets out these days and that's my bass. No locks on it yet but I have plans to install some.

I can't really figure out why my strap keeps slipping off the Ric, I think it's because

A) I end up taking it off and on alot (it gets in my way when I want to sit around and play as opposed to standing up)

B) When i'm playing i'll often rest the guitar on my knee, and that creates slack in the strap allowing it to loosen, or, the strap gets twisted around so that when the weight of the guitar is back on the strap it just pulls right off

I have a real nice leather strap for the Ric as well, one of these. http://www.sweetwater.com/images/items/ ... -large.jpg

I use these strap locks on my Rics. They fit perfectly over the vintage strap buttons, move very freely, and don't come off. You can get them built in to the strap or get them to put on your current strap.

Expect nothing and you'll never be disappointed (and I mean that in an optimistic way).

My 370 and 330/12 came with schaller compatible straplock buttons. I modified my vintage 350V63 by getting two UNF bolts with an identical thread to the vintage strap buttons and fitting schaller buttons. You have to drill the schallers out slightly to accommodate the bolts, but the advantage is that you can refit the vintage buttons at any time and the guitar itself is not modified.
