"Smokin" CS Bass on Ebay

Post by jai_the_bass »

Has everyone seen this?

http://cgi.ebay.com/RICKENBACKER-1991-4 ... 2a0a4b15b3

Even allowing for the smoke staining to be genuine, I can't understand why anyone who has a CS bass would have the pickguard sprayed to cover the signature - DOH!!! :?
Can we have a bit more talent in the monitors please.....?

Judging by the paint left around the screwholes, I wonder how much of the original paint was even left on it.

Must admit I've had Kippers for breakfast with LESS smoking than this bass.
I mean there are some heavy smokers, but this........

Ugh. Never buy anything from a smoker. I bought an SAE Parametric Equalizer advertised as mint condition on eBay last summer. When it arrived, the whole box stank, not like smoke, but just like yuck. Opening it up, the reek became worse. I couldn't even let it stay in my place. I boxed it up and and set it in the garage. Contacted the seller, he admitted he was a smoker, but wouldn't do much about it. The hand of eBay forced him to take it back based on it being misrepresented. At least this guy is admitting to the smoking issue up front.

I thought the 1999 sold by RIC last week was supposed to be a one-off tobacco finish - looks like there's another one

I don't believe it. It's grungy for sure, and cigarettes can do some serious finish damage but that!?

Did he crawl inside the case and smoke with it in there? Leave it in a walk-in humidor? It looks like it was painted...

If true, the thing would permanently reek like the foulest ashtray on earth.

But I do have to say on the plus side, if the price is right it could have good use. I do think the CS basses play very well.
Might be worth getting and checking with Paul on what a refinish on it would cost? Although without the certificate that
probably doesn't make sense. But what about using it as a bass for a custom project of some sort? He says it's a 1991,
so it's an early one that people seem to think is more desirable. I didn't run the serial #, but there is a picture of the
plate.

But geez, is he sure that wasn't in a meat smoker for a few years?!?

I like it.... though it may need to air for 18 months to get rid of the aroma!
