I used to use Superwound stings which I believe were from the same folks who make Rotosound. Only the core of the string passed over the bridge and they worked great on Rics. I don't think they're made anymore though. I know Carvin makes taper wound strings but don't know if they'll work on a Ric. You might want to call them and get measurements for the distance of the taper.

Ken, that tailpiece of yours looks great. That's closer to what I wanted mine to look like, but I had to do it with a hacksaw, files, and a handheld drill. Talk about low-tech! When I my new DR strings arrive, I'll post a full photo of my work for all to ridicule.

Bill, I also saw referenced a set of taperwounds that worked on a bass with the strings mounted through the body. He was searching for a replacement set and not having luck.

Dane, I can't say for sure if it changed the tone. I've had that thing on there so long that all I can say is that it sounds more solid. It's too bad everyone is so scattered, otherwise I'd have no problem getting together for some tone comparisons.

I would gladly buy a brass 5 string mount for my 4003 4-2-5. I like tapercore strings. Anybody going to make them ? I'll buy one please.
It's too early in the morning to talk about our relationship !
