McGuinn cover - If I needed someone
McGuinn cover - If I needed someone
Hi, I just posted my cover (of Roger's cover) of George Harrison's song. There is a ton of 360/12 jangle on this one. As a matter of fact, ALL guitar tracks were done using a 360/12, through a JangleBox 2. My version can be found on the Roger McGuinn page on my website: http://www.beatbyrd.com
As always, constructive comments are welcome. Thanks. Tom

McGuinn cover - If I needed someone
Tom -- great song !!
How many over dubs of the 360-12 did you do on this ??
Are all over dubs with the same Janglebox settings ?

Tom, these are very impressive cover versions. All the individual elements are expertly performed and beautifully balanced. Great job!beatbyrd wrote:Hi, I just posted my cover (of Roger's cover) of George Harrison's song. There is a ton of 360/12 jangle on this one. Tom,
These are really excellent. I went through a number of your tracks. You sounded a LOT like Petty on Breakdown. Great stuff!

Steve, that Rick 12/JangleBox combination is fantastic. Thanks for providing your half of that equation.janglebox wrote:Tom, these are very impressive cover versions. Rich, I ended up doing 6 tracks of 360/12 and didn't change the JB2 settings at all. Roger seemed to get more 'cut' on his version (on the lead fills), but I attribute that to the electronics in his guitar and maybe using toasters. I tried putting a DS-1 distortion in the chain before the JB2 but it didn't give me the sound I wanted, so I bypassed it. He also records on a computer and has access to plug-ins to finely tune his sound. I'm still learning as I go.
Thanks to all for the kind words and encouragement. Tom

Re: McGuinn cover - If I needed someone
there is a Byrd's style version of "If I needed someone" on You Tube, done by The Beatles. I had never heard it but they tried to sound like The Byrds, it obviously was not released.

I couldn't find it, Zurdo. Everything I found, covers and all sounded like, or attempted to sound like the recording on Rubber Soul.

oh no, it's there alright. Whoever is playing the Rickenbacker is definitely emulating McGuinn's playing. the recording plays a few starts and stops, like someone saying "ok, Track 5" from the booth or something like that.jimk wrote:I couldn't find it, Zurdo. I found it by searching for "the beatles", not by song title. Try that.

Re: McGuinn cover - If I needed someone
That isn't much to go on. I quit looking after page 19. It wouldn't be hard to do at all if you understand McGuinn's basic style of playing, and you have a capo. An interesting departure would be to acquire a partial capo, so that you could leave the A and E pairs open.

I'll try to find it as soon as I reinstall my Windows, it's all corrupted, can't copy & paste, have no sound, etc.

Re: McGuinn cover - If I needed someone
I found it but it's not "If I Needed Someone", it's "And your bird can sing", with the Rickenbacker.

notice the chord when John sings "....bring you down", a different chord than the recorded version.
otherwise sorry for any confusion.

Re: McGuinn cover - If I needed someone
Oh yeah, I've heard this version before. I wish they had cleaned up the guitar riff a little better and used this version instead of the one with the two Epiphone Casinos. Oh well, at least this version has been preserved for posterity. Thanks for posting this, Zurdo.

Re: McGuinn cover - If I needed someone
some people insist it was two Fender Stratocasters, according to the book they read and quote. The truth is that the guitars sound like a Casino instead of a Strat.jimk wrote:Oh yeah, I've heard this version before.
