Blackstar 4003SPC

Post by Marky »

Hi all

I'm hoping someone here may know of a Blackstar 4003 for sale. I have the urge and can't resist!!

I have missed a couple on ebay (both overpriced really) and have just been let down on a private deal.. it's almost like I'm feted never to have one!

Anyway, I'd be massively grateful if you could let me know. I'm in the UK BTW (not that it should make any difference).

Thanks for that. I have emailed them and they have a private offer already, but will let me know. It is a bit more beaten up than I would like and the replacement pickup is a bit of a worry, not original? If they can do me a deal then it may be worth a try!

Keep 'em coming though!!

"Includes replacement stock bridge pick up". I don't see a problem. Another genuine Rickenbacker black pickup is included.

Well, here's your chance! Price is about right, maybe a tad high.

This topic really should be discussed in The Marketplace Section of the RRF for obvious reasons.

That's a distinctive-looking Ric bass. What's the SPC/special designation mean on this model?

Mark, this is certainly an excellent example. Looks like the seller might not ship to UK however it's possible someone here might be able to help you.

As for the price? I don't think it'll disappear too quickly at that number so, you should have time to negotiate the shipping and probably price with the seller.

Worth a shot imo

Noel, the SPC designation was used on three "Special" limited-edition models produced in the late 1980s. These were the Tuxedo, the Blackstar (as seen above), and the Redneck. All were 4003S basses (no binding) with black hardware and plastic. The special part of the paint schemes was the monochromatic treatment, with a maple fretboard painted the same color as the rest of the wood on the instrument. Thus, the Tuxedo was all white with black trim, the Redneck, all red, and the Blackstar, all black (except, inexplicably, the bridge pickup cover in chrome). Supposedly, 200 of the Blackstar were made (some as five-stringers), 125 Rednecks (some as eight-stringers), and either 100 or 115 Tuxedoes (at least one leftie). Each came with a certificate of the number within the run (e.g. "No. 74 of 200"), but there is no way of knowing if the full runs of these limited editions were actually completed. Here's a shot of Ted Staberow's "Triumvirate" -- one of each in near mint condition:

Paul, it wasn't just the handrest. The bass was sort of a black/chrome theme, with chrome strap buttons, chrome thumb screws for the mute, and chrome neck pickup surround. I have seen some with all-black vintage-style knobs, and others with the silver discs.

Correct. I've heard of some Blackstars with a black handrest, but they could have been substituted. They should come standard with the silver-top knobs, but those are easy to substitute. And of course, many of the screws on the hardware are chrome.
