Double Fantasy Stripped

Post by joepee »

Has anyone listened to John Lennon au naturel on his tracks? Been listening on youvalve. Don't know how long they will be available, but like sitting across the room form him. Love not hearing phasing and reverb. What a great voice soft to rock, blues.

Been forever that I've anything to contribute. If this has already been discussed before, I apologize.

Hope I'm not the last person to know about this release.

Outstanding.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

This is like sitting across the chair from John Lennon. Very tender vocal performance. It' so difficult to believe he couldn't stand the sound of his vocals without putting all those effects over them.

Wow, anybody else think the guitar at the beginning of Just Like Starting Over sounds like it could be his original 325? I know he was playing it again around these sessions, but hearing this stripped down version makes me think...

That was great to hear his stuff like that. I always prefer to hear original"clean" mixes like that. Some great bass work. Thanks for sharing that. Mark

Great, great stuff...my favorite "stripped down" recording is I'm Losing You...very bluesy and his voice is fantastic.

Hey Joe, thanks for sharing. I made a mix CD with the "Stripped" version first and the original 2xFantasy cut 2nd -- John's tunes. Huge difference.

After listening to the "without filler" (Stripped) and "with filler" (original 1980 release) I just had to wonder if JL was a bit insecure about his vocals after being out of the pop scene for so long. The "Stripped" mixes prove he had nothing to worry about.

BTW, that is some raw stuff that John and Yoko are dealing with in this album. I didn't pick it up from 2xFantasy but it jumps out at you on "Stripped." John's vocals on "Losing You" tell all . . . and Yoko's "Moving On" hits pretty hard.

The lovely part of all Lennon's material is him dealing with his feelings up front and out there. Not many artists exposed their feelings for the world to peruse.

John Lennon did.

Very intuitive on your part not only to recognize the subject matter as such, but also to hear the up-frontness (sorry for the lack of words) coming through in his vocals. Amazing.

I didn't really hear as much of what he was going through at the time. Now I hear it with a completely different ear. I guess my experiences through age, children, and marriages helps create a richer palette as a listener. But I also hear something far richer in the new stripped versions. I wish, as a fan, I was appreciating his art with the artist (Lennon) still around, yet it never ceases to get old or amaze me any less.

+1 on the clean. As for the bass, that's Tony Levin. Great is an understatement, don't you know. And thank the stars that someone decided to put the bass somewhere in the mix. Listen to Lennon's '73-'74 stuff with Levin and it's like he's still weilding that axe against McCartney: no bass! Have you listened to Whatever Gets You Throgh the NIght? Fantastic bass from Levin that you can just barely hear; you can't feel it at all.

John Lennon did.
Not to put a damper on your point (and sorry for the double post - can't multi-quote on this forum), but Dylan sure did, and he's 99% of why Lennon did.

These stripped down versions brought a tear to my eyes. They are brilliant and John's vocals are so soulful and heartfelt. John at his finest IMO. Thanks for posting these.
