I have seen machine heads just like that on a Cort Jazz Bass copy a friend in high school gave me.

With the wear this old Rick sports, the old Grover tuners probably exploded and were replaced.

This is the one that the P.O. used to play cymbals with.THere've been at least three different types of tuners on it. I installed these because they're the most similar to wavy grovers.

Are those non-original pickups in there? If so, you might want to get some 70's High Gain pickups and throw them in there, probably sound a lot better.

Generally speaking, the luthier is correct in that a refin would diminish the value of the guitar in most cases. But it's your guitar, and it's not the Mona Lisa, so do what you like with it. Rics of that vintage are worth a couple grand, and while you may knock few hundred off the resale with a refin, go crazy if you don't like what you have!

Nobody has ever looked at it and called it a beater except myself!
Front p/up is stock and rear is a made in Saskatoon Fury. The stocker went for a s*** in '86.

Looks like it just needs the right pickup and some new Rick tuners and keep playing it the way that it is.
