16k toasters?
Does anybody have any sound samples or comments who have had their toasters wound up to around 16k? I know the higher you wind it the less clear it gets, but my goal is to get a more versatile sound and I'm thinking that 16k toasters might do the trick. Especially when it comes to the distorted side of things.

I think Paulie might be able to advise/comment on this, as he has some
Sergio's special Super Overwound Toasters, with beefed up magnets, on a couple of his Double Bounds.

My 360V64 had 14+kOhm toasters (standard magnets), and to be honest, I didn't like them at all.DavidW wrote:Does anybody have any sound samples or comments who have had their toasters wound up to around 16k? They sound err.. 'common'; not very special or 'Rickenbackerish'
Well off course they sound like a Rickenbacker in a way, because they ARE Rickenbackers
A mid heavy sound with not much character. No sparkling highs and quite muddy basses.
Don't even try flatwounds, you'll hear no highs at all anymore.
The gain in output wasn't such that it made a big difference for distortion; still quite low output.
This might be different with the heavier magnets though.
Long story short; they got unwound, I got happy.
I haven't heard the Hb's but I guess that 's a better option for you if it's output you're after.
Somehow they will even fit in a toaster cover, I think I read on this forum somewhere.
Re: 16k toasters?
Thanks for the info. I'm doing this with guitar pickups, but i'm sure it'd be more or less the same. I was going to wind them up to 16k, but I think I'll just take them up to 12 instead. Is there anybody that replaced the magnets that might be able to comment on the sound?
Re: 16k toasters?
the 360V64 IS a guitar, David.

Wim, please forgive me. I actually know that, I didn't get much sleep last night and I just scanned the post. I guess it was a combination of that + seeing the bass as your avatar
