Hey all,
I'm doing some research on powered main PA speakers, and wanted to see other's experiences and opinions. Use would be for a 5 piece new acoustic/newgrass type band. Trio harmony vocals, acoustic guitars, mando, banjo, bass. Used for small hall gigs (< 300 people). One desire is low weight and portability, so I have been looking at 12's instead of 15's but not sold on 12's. Other desire, due to great vocal harmonies, is quality sound reproduction. Mackie's, Yamaha, dB Technologies (local guy as a pair of Opera 412 for $500), and others. Trying to stay away from Berhinger mains, but if you have experience with them, let me know your opinions. Thanks Chris

Re: Powered PA Main Speakers
Hi Chris.
I purchased some JBL EON 315 speakers some months back. Pretty damned good but perhaps a bit underpowered at 280W RMS each. The EON 515s might be more suitable at 500W - plenty of headroom for you. Easily daisychained if you want to add more of the same at a later date. I also bought a couple of 10" EON 510s for foldback.
Extremely light and very transportable due to the D class digital amp and neodyne speaker magnets.
Worth checking out.
IMO totally avoid the 'B' brand........

I'm a really big fan of the JBL PRX500 series:

These have been rock solid for us and simply sound great. A bit pricey perhaps, but deals abound, and you really do get what you pay for. I'm also pretty sure that JBL's will do better than most if you choose to flip them down the road.
I chose the PRX535's for Hautewerk's mains as they have a wider frequency range and wider dispersion field than all the other models, also thinking a three-way system could be used without a sub-woofer. So far this has been a good choice, although a sub with the keyboards would probably be pretty amazing.
UPDATE: Looks like Howard was typing as I was! Anyway, two votes for JBL!

Re: Powered PA Main Speakers
Our band has QSC K10 mains, but if you plan to run bass through them perhaps the K12s would be better, although, your band being an acoustic band the former may work fine. To augment to bottom end we have a pair of KSubs to go with the K10s, all run from an Allen&Heath PA12 mixer.

Don't overlook Carvin - a pair of their LM12As might be right up your alley. I've been using a pair of LM15As at my church for the last 4+ years, and they're excellent. If budget is a consideration (and when it isn't it?) Carvin offers a pretty compelling price-performance balance.
