Hahaha. That's partly Weller's fault; he was never all that interested in making it big in the U.S.

Nonetheless, as spread out as they are, there are probably still more Jam fans in the U.S. than the U.K; we're just spread out across the entire United States.

Good point. It still surprises me how many folks I meet who are knowledgable about music have never heard of them. I am embarassed to say I didn't really know who they were until 3 years ago and I just can't figure out how I missed them for so long!

Thought I'd share this as my first post. A couple of weeks ago my band was playing on the same bill at a UK South coast festival where Bruce Foxton and From The Jam where the headline act. Imagine my huge disappointment when Bruce came on stage sporting some kinda F*nder. I remember seeing The Jam back in their heyday when both Paul Weller and Bruce Foxton used Rickenbackers exclusively ... I guess times are hard ... sad days indeed!

He does like that all black P bass. He still plays at least one Rick though, IIRC.

LOVE the Jam! We used to do their version of the Booller T & The MGs song, "Midnight Hour." I prefer their version to the original by far! I'd known about the Jam, since I saw ads for Paul Weller's endorsement of Vox amps in Guitar Player Magazine, back in the early 80s, but I didn't start listening to them, until 1990, when the bass player from a pop covers band I was in back in 1990, played some of their tuneage to me on the car stereo, after a band practice. Good stuff! Naurally I had to get some Jam albums. For years, I've used riffs from "News of The World", to check out amps for suitability to do what I call supercharged chime. It was playing the intro to that song, that convinced me to buy my first 360 (a jetglo one), back in early 1995. It's too bad The Jam isn't more appreciated in the US.

I went to see Weller back in '91, at a club in LA. There were 11 people in the audience...

Lucky you, and lucky her! I've only had one boyfriend, who was also a musician like me (we even played in a couple of bands together). He also played guitar, but for him, it was Superstrat-type guitars, Teles or Fender Strats!

Yuppers! That's the ad! It looks just as cool now, as it did almost 30 years ago. If I'd been a bit more musically open minded back then, I probably would have at least checked out The Jam/bought an album back when the ad was shown in Guitar Player. But noooooo, I was mainly into heavy rock, blues-rock, and thought The Jam was a punk rock band, and as far as I was concerned back then, the only punk bands worth listening to were The Clash, The Ramones, and The Buzzcocks!

Bruce was using a F from 'All Mod Cons' on, but used the Ric for gigs until he started using the F live towards the end of the Jam.
He preferred the sound of the F, but liked the thinner neck on the Ric. In fact Bruce even tried an Ibanez Ric copy to get a different sound but retain the look during the Modern World period. He also used an Epiphone Rivoli bass in the studio.

Bruce and Paul often used 'other' guitars on recordings. In The City was the only album that was all Rics. The Rics were pretty much just image and only stayed because of that. If Pete Townshend had played a Fibson Craterblaster in the Who then we wouldn't be here on the Ric forum talking about the Jam.
