Don't Throw Your love Away

Post by Rick_Doeschler »

Question for the group,

All of the versions I have of the Searchers doing Don't Throw Your Love Away are recorded in the key of C#. Needles and Pins was their hit just befor subject song and they ended it in the Key of C#.
Do you think that was intentional for them to go from "Needles" into "Don't" since they were already in the Key of C#?

Let's discuss.

Interesting question Rick, however, my first thought is that the key of "Don't Throw Your Love Away" had little to do with the "Needles and Pins" recording. The C# has always bothered me as no guitarist plays in C# as a rule. I am going to bet that the song was meant to be recorded in D and concert pitch was not checked prior to the final take. The same thing happened to "Bumble Bee" which was recorded in A-flat although it was intended to be in the key of A. There may be much more to this than meets the ear, but this is my take on it at present.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Rick,

I'm no musician, so I can't discuss"Don't Throw Your Love Away" from the technical viewpoint you've raised. However, Chris Curtis said in an interview that he deliberately tried to get a song that wasn't too far from their last hit when he made song selections for the next singles, and I believe he was talking about "Don't Throw Your Love Away" when he said it, so that MIGHT have something to do with the key, but I can't say for sure. Tony Jackson once said he was the one who suggested that little "Arabian Nights" bit that Mike played in the song.
