i've only seen lake's j-bass with crimso. i don't think a rick has ever graced crimso save for a '73 style fireglo 4001 owned by wetton but tucked away in his collection.

I don't think JW's Rick is a '73 as it has padauk/walnut (?) headwings and no skunk stripe.

I believe, from pics and video, it has a horshoe with the shorter surround and full-length headstock.

Nontheless, I am certain it is a 1971 or earlier.

Could I be wrong, but I thought Chris's bass had the .0047 cap and stereo wiring?, I've just had a delve into a CS4001 and found neither under the hood?.

I think RIC's standard answer to that question is that the 4001CS is "based on Chris Squire's famous RM1999 but not identical to, etc..." words to that effect. Check with member Miguel Falco, I believe he had his CS rewired in stereo by another forum member here last year.

Thanks Jim, that makes sense, not everybody has the option for stereo, although I never play my 4001's without.

Just surfing and can't find any conclusive info on whether Chris actually had the cap fitted in his bass, did the 64 4001 version Chris started with have the cap as standard?.
Seems very odd that RIC would omit this cap unless it was standard at the time without it, only other reason I can think is, was 91 the era that the 4003 series had no cap fitted?.

Chris' would have had a cap originally. I believe you're right on concerning the "no cap in '91" theory.

With info from Jim and thinking on the sound, Chris's bass came mono as standard ( no cap), then self wired for stereo, perhaps a cap was not added (we know he loved the sound but needed the stereo, why change the bridge pup sound ). With his extreme amp settings, I'm not sure he needed the cap, listening, the sound has a warm sound but aggressive, yet as an example Geddy's sound is aggressive too, ( Geddy bought a 4001 to try and get Chris's sound, but he's said he never could) and yet it's really quite bright, .0047 bright, yet Geddy fingers and Chris picks. Forgive me I'm just rambling.

There must be a video of Chris playing with the switch in the bridge position. We should be able to tell unless his amp settings for that pu have the bass cut.
