Yearly Attrition of 4001 basses

Here's a thought- as the years pass, these basses are getting older, and one would think scarcer.

In terms of aging (necks warping, cracking from misadjustment, etc) how many 4001's do you think we "lose" per year by attrition?

I can only speak for my #1, my '75 4001. I've never done a neck adjustment on it in the 16 years I have owned it, and the strings I put on it, Fender nickelrounds, I put on there in 1995.

Since there is more easy access for to how to properly adjust 4001 necks with websites such as this and the RIC company forum, I think the 4001 basses that are still around have a much better chance of not getting ruined.

Most of the ones that were going to get ruined like that have already done so.

Mine was "ruined" by someone doing an improper truss rod adjustment. It's been fixed and has had Rotosound round wounds on it for years...

That makes sense, the Internet is wonderful for a lot of things. My Rick is a "pre-internet buy" meaning no internet was involved in the purchase of it, haha

Oof! That picture makes me wince. Poor baby. Glad he's fixed now, but what a crime. I hope the perpetrator is serving time.

I have no idea. I bought it a few years ago from a friend of mine, he found it in a pawn shop several years before that. It had been fixed before he got it. Other than looking bad, it's great player with a fantastic neck. I've had it strung with Rotosound rounds since I got it with no issues whatever. The neck is stable as a rock. Who knows, maybe the "extra" glue joint actually helps...
