Rhythm Guitar on "Something"

Post by lennonon »

Is that JL on Rhythm guitar on "Something"? Listening to the Ebbets version of the AR CD the other day and there's a very distinct "rhythm-y" JL strumming going on there. I know Lewisohn says JL is NOT on the track, but listen to the playing....tell me what you think?

Perhaps George simply plays rhythm guitar w/a Lennon-esque style.

Anyone? Thanks....

I have read somewhere that by the time Abbey Road rolled around, Lennon would rarely show up for the recording of any Harrison tunes.

Nah, it's Harrison on his Les Paul, I have some early takes of this song with just him on guitar and nothing else, and it's pretty much the same as the original except for the solo.

No way it was Lennon....they were all doing their own thing around that time.....

That is such a terrific song!! It has a "monumental" sound to it.....

I thought "Abbey Road" was a deliberate attempt to cooperate with each other, after "Let It Be" and the White Album Sessions. A lot of Abbey Road has a "band" sound to it.

Wasn't John in an auto crash about this time? I'm pretty sure he missed some sessions.

Chris: If this was indeed the case, I have sold George Harrison short all these years. He certainly plays a mean bass part in Something. Image

That bass line right after the solo is great! One of my many McFavorites!

Lennon was indeed in a crash around this time, and missed a few sessions for Abbey Road. There are 3 or so songs he doesn't play on from the album, but off-hand I don't recall which, but I think Something was one of them.

Paul played the bass part not John or George on Something. George complained for a while afterwards that if he needed a bass player it would never be Paul Mccartny due to this song and Paul's too busy bass part in it. He later mellowed on it and actually got to like the busy bass work that Paul had done.

nice as the bass parts are, one more note anywhere and it would have been over the edge IMHO

The Beatles recorded 36 basic track takes of 'Something' on the 2nd of May 1969 with Paul(Bass), Ringo(Drums), John(Guitar), George(Guitar) and Billy Preston(Piano).
I think it's John on Rythm guitar, unless George overdubbed the rythm guitar part like he did with the lead guitar solo.
The car crash John had in Scotland, with Yoko, Julian and Kyoko, made him miss the sessions between 1 and 8 July; so he missed 'Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight' and 'Here Comes The Sun'.
As for Paul's Bass Line on 'Something' here's George about it:
"Sometimes Paul 'dictated' for the good of a song, he was very creative with what he contributed to my songs at the time. You just have to listen to the Bass line on 'Something' to know that when Paul wanted to. he could give a lot."
