Fretless crown radius

Post by cassius987 »

My 4003FL and 4001FL have noticeably "larger" (flatter) radii (radiuses?) than my two 4003s. What about you all?

I just checked my '07 DCM 4003 and my '08 4003FL and they appear to be the same, as viewed from the butt of the neck toward the headstock (see the curve of the binding on the butt of the neck). But if I view them just along the fingerboard (not looking at the butt of the neck), they appear to be different, with the FL more flat. Are you sure that the frets aren't creating an illusion of curvature that the FL doesn't?

In other words, did you use a flat edge to actually "measure" them?
Can we have everything louder than everything else?

I compared them by looking at the binding at the end of the fingerboard just like you. The fretted are around 10-12'', the fretless 4003 is around 18'' and the fretless 4001 is slightly less, maybe 16''. I'm lucky these basses are all bound or else it would have been a little harder to visualize and measure.

Cassius, I have a set of StuMac crown radius gauges. Would you like me to mail them out to you so you can take direct measurements?
