Hear THE Blue Boy 4000 in these videos from 1961

Has anyone ever posted any Jim Reeves youtube videos?

These are pretty good quality, from 1961. Featuring the ultra cool Blue Boy Rickenbackers...including the 4000 bass.

Only bits of the 4000 get screen time at the beginning and end of this video, but it sounds nice and is played well:

This one doesn't show the 4000 until the very end, but there is no doubt that it is indeed the 4000.

Very nice, smooth voice on Jim Reeves. And nice bass playing too. That must be James Kirkland on bass?

Wow, those were great! Not only was the bass electric, but it was a Rickenbacker. And it was blue. I wonder what kind of impression it made on live audiences.

Well that's too bad. Apparently the videos have been removed from YouTube due to copyright infringement. They only lasted a few hours after I posted them.

Did I accidentally stir something up? Probably.

There are other videos that are still there if you look hard enough, but the two that I chose had nice, clear video and audio. You have to find the earlier videos if you want to see/hear the 4000. It sits well in the mix, and is well played, but I'm afraid to post any more links for fear that they'll get removed from YouTube as well.

It isn't Squire/Geddy-like, (so some of you forum-ites may not appreciate it!) but it is the earliest Rick bass playing that I've ever heard AFAIK and it sounds great to me.

It's interesting, historically, that a lot of country/rockabilly players used Ricks in the 50s-early 60s, then he Fab Four came along and RIC became synonymous with Britpop, not that that was a bad ting. Just think if Rick had continued be heavily associated with both country players, as well as more Britpop/power pop-style music.

It still sounds like a Rickenbacker.... Its a slightly clearer sound than would have been the normal at the time..
