The binding problem I referred to is in reference to the aluminum doing what it's supposed to- oxidize to protect itself. That oxidation layer, unfortunately, causes the part to grow slightly. If the tolerances are held too tight and/or expansion due to dissimilar metals happens, the saddle can bind in the slot. Make the parts loose and they, of course, will likely rattle.

Mr. Hall,

Thank you for taking the time to respond. Your willingness to give us good and helpful feedback on a regular basus makes me proud to own 3 (and counting) of your fine instruments!

Update.

All machining is complete. I'll get to the plater's after the holiday.

Woo Hoo!

Here's a question for all to comment on: octave over or under?

Just a guess, but I would think pick players are going to have the octave on top. :?:

Not just the pick players. I play my 4003S/8 fingerstyle and I would prefer the octave strings were over or on top. I find it easier to finger that way, especially when I'm playing more than one string at a time. My 12 string bass has the octave strings over the fundamentals. Someday I might make the 4003S/8 a new nut and saddles and change the order of the strings.

Octave on top. It definitely makes more sence with a pick, which is the way I play mine.

Yep, my Dane conversion has the octave on top. I can't imagine it being the other way around. Wish I had been able to make
the Gil-Fest to show it to everyone there so you could have seen it first hand.

It's too bad others haven't offered us the same courtesy as Kevin did . . .
