Same pickups. I have two V63s ('93 and '97) and a C64 ('05) RIHS and they all are constructed the same and wound to the same number of turns.bluewhale wrote:I think the 4001C64 horseshoe is a revision of the 4001V63 horseshoe. Maybe the pickups on a C64 sound more like the ones Squire originally used. (That's not to take anything away from the mighty V63!)johnallg wrote:... a V63 has the same pickups as the CS so other than the fretboard vermillion influence, would sound the same.

How many Ric basses do you have now John? I still have my 4. I guess I've lost track.

My dream bass is a MG v63, early '90's vintage. That will cure my gear acquisition syndrome. (yah........right.)

I think that the V63 and C64 horseshoes differ based on my reading of John Hall's comment in this old threadjohnallg wrote:Same pickups. I have two V63s ('93 and '97) and a C64 ('05) RIHS and they all are constructed the same and wound to the same number of turns.

Whatever change he is referring to, it might still be consistent with your observations about construction and winding.

What John was talking about there was the old original horseshoe, where the shoes were the only magnets, and the reissue horseshoe which has Alnico permanent magnets along with non-magnetized shoes. With the reissues, the shoe directs the magnetic field similar to the originals so you get a similar sound. I believe John once said they worked very hard to get the reissue sound to be as close as possible to the originals, but it's hard to say whether it's exactly the same unless you have both to compare.bluewhale wrote:I think that the V63 and C64 horseshoes differ based on my reading of John Hall's comment in this old threadjohnallg wrote:Same pickups. Pretty much anything with horseshoes since the early '70s will have reissues...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...
Re: Chris Squire Signature Bass Wanted
What CJ and JH said. All RIHS have the same basic characteristics regarding alnico slugs, copper winding turns (give or take a few), coil shape/form, and shoes of plain steel. LIke I said, I have 3 RIHS that are identical, V63s and a C64.cjj wrote:What John was talking about there was the old original horseshoe, where the shoes were the only magnets, and the reissue horseshoe which has Alnico permanent magnets along with non-magnetized shoes. That's not the change I mean. I mean that the third paragraph in John Hall's post seems describe some change in the C64 horseshoe that would have come after the V63 horseshoe. It singles out the C Series.

Visual differences as well. The V series shoes meet together and are straight across, parallel to the body. The latest C series shoes meet together at a shallow peak.bluewhale wrote: I think that the V63 and C64 horseshoes differ based on my reading of John Hall's comment in this old thread

This one is getting some attention. It's at $3K, with about 2 days remaining.

There was on several months ago (located in Sweden or Switzerland, or someplace like that) that appeared to be in mint condition, but didn't garner much attention.
Hey, remember that one that was all discolored big-time. It looked like is may have been positioned right above a cigarette exhaust fan or something.

If Mozart were with us today, he'd play a Fireglo 4001C64! ~~~*~~~ Beethoven, on the other hand, would play a Matte Jetglo 4001C64S!

And I have been lucky enough to acquire it. I tried buying one of these several years ago on ebay. I had to bow out when the bidding reached 7K. Timing... they say is everything. I will post pics after it arrives. I am stoked!
