R.I.P. Mick Karn
I know some of the folks around here were probably Japan fans, but it's a distinct minority, I'm sure. Rest In Peace Mick Karn, bassist for seminal synth-pop band, Japan. Early Duran Duran was influenced by them, as were others. He played a mean fretless : http://blogs.laweekly.com/westcoastsoun ... rn_rip.php

Oh man...
I only learned within the past few months of his illness, but wasn't expecting this. His playing style is the only reason I sometimes think about getting a bass, and it would be fretless. Loved his playing on some of Gary Numan's music as well.

Oh man, they just keep going...

I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

I am/was such a huge fan of Mick Karn, Sylvian, Japan, etc. What a style and player. Check out his work with Peter Murphy on Dali's Car; what a collaboration!

I was a big fan of his bass playing in my late teens, as Japan got first noticed. I bought a Wal bass a couple of months ago, (some 25 years after I first played one) and it's him, not Geddy, who I associate that sound with.
Far, far too young.
Peace.

Oh, that's sad. I loved his playing with Japan.
I remember reading a great interview with him, many moons ago, which went something like this:
Interviewer (pointing at fretboard): "Do you know what note this is?"
Karn: "No..."
Interviewer: "Or this one?"
Karn (playing): "No... but I do know that these two sound REALLY good together"
