Ric's & Numbers. What If They Were Named?

Post by Grey »

I was thinking this could make for an interesting thread. The Gibson Firebird, SG, Explorer, Fender Telecaster, Mustang and Jaguar are just a few examples but we instantly associate the name with the guitar, and they just seem to fit the 'look'.

If Ric's had name designations instead of numbers, what would they be called?

Combo & Capri?

Seriously, I wouldn't have an idea what name would fit the new style 360, let alone the O.S. 360!

Oh I always forget about those. Combo is kind of a generic name but Capri is cool.

I'm a bit puzzled though - how does Telecaster fit the look, or SG fit its look?

I think the name got impressed with the image of the shape of the guitar, in such a way that when we see the name used for something else we still see the guitar in our mind!

Well SG just stands for solid-guitar so the name there quite literally matches the guitar. Telecaster.. well... it's a Telecaster.

Well, some of the guys at the factory used to call the New Style 360 the "Toilet Seat" when it was first introduced, so, would you really want it to have a name instead of a number?

Interesting topic though. I was thinking about this recently as well.

See, you can't think of anything else - a very common linguistical phenomenon!

Officially there's not really a definition of what SG means, but in the sales office we call it Standard Guitar as it was meant as replacement of the Les Paul Model which is known these days as Les Paul Standard (even though "Les Paul Model" is still written on its headstock).

If guitar names represent their look, then what about the Gibson BFGs?

I will now always think of tiolets when I pick up my 360

Actually i'm pretty sure the name is an official designation, after they changed it without Les' knowledge and he refused to have his name on it.

I always thought Gibson BFG stood for Big <expletive> Guitar...

As far as my own research has gone, the SG does, in fact, stand for "Solid Guitar". A number of books on Les and his guitars mention this fact, and that Les refused to allow his name on them. Although Les and Mary did pose with SGs for Gibson, Les was not too fond of them, and rarely used his.

The Laredo and Cheyenne names for the 4004 basses seem to suit them very well in my opinion. :)
JETGLO should officially be renamed JETGLO ROCKS! :-)
