Ooh, that video of Wishbone Ash doing "Vas Dis" has nice shots of a 21-fretter (Jetglo? Eggplantglo?).

Sparks - Falling in Love With Myself
Off the Kimono My House album. Quite possibly THE song that got me into RIC basses all those years ago. '73 MG 4001 played through an HH amp setup. Thunderous sound with a very nice bass solo in the middle eight in 3/4 time. Played by Martin Gordon.
The Damned - Wait for the Blackout.
Off the Black Album. Played by Paul Gray who later went on to play with UFO. Classic RIC punchy sound. I believe it's a '77 AZ 4001 through an Acoustic setup. I could ask him if it's important to know.
And of course feel free to recommend anything by the Ghosthookers. I need the money.

Nowhere in the gear section of his website does he mention a Rick bass: http://www.golden-earring.nl/rinus/superdick2112 wrote:Golden Earring - Radar Love

I'm pretty sure it's JG. Looks like a pre-Feb '71 bass, because there is no binding at the end of the fretboard. My Jan '71 is like this, but the Feb and March '71's that I've had, have binding on the end.bassduke49 wrote:Ooh, that video of Wishbone Ash doing "Vas Dis" has nice shots of a 21-fretter (Jetglo? Paul - I think any songs will need to have some provenance as to whether they were actually performed with a Rickenbacker. For instance, although the Spinal Tap movie shows a Ric bass being used for in a video clip "Flower People", its doubtful that it was actually used for the recording.

Right, and ditto for songs like "Born To Be Wild". Sure, they were all using Ricks in the videos, but I know it was recorded on an Esquire guitar - who knows about the bass?86kubicki wrote:Paul - I think any songs will need to have some provenance as to whether they were actually performed with a Rickenbacker. Yes Chris Squire solos on "Ritual" ( side 4 Tales From Topographic Oceans) particularly any live versions (Yesshows or any bootlegs) where Squire went crazy during the 75/76 tours.RM + fuzz Mutron echo overdrive and anything he could plug in etc.....
Northern lights by Renaissance. (RM)nice little figure at the bridge to last chorus.
Firth of Fifth by Genesis.Rick RM or the doubleneck? Sounds possibly bi amped so could be a later Rick than the RM seen in earlier pics.
Success Story The Who. 4001 8string #MH2553 identical to Squires.
Survival Yes.Pre "Fish" wah wah and then some.
Wall St Shuffle 10CC.(the bass I passed on at the shop for a Jazz!).Some nice little McCartney esque bits.
Yes Going For The One great sounding Rick 4001 8 stringer (can also be heard on live recordings of Roundabout encores 74 onwards).
Whole Yes Album 4001 24 fretter I think. Some guy called Howe interupts the Rick proceedings with an acoustic number...Howe dare he?
Seem to recall BTO playing "You aint seen nothin yet" using a 4000....does that count?

"kid" - the Pretenders. great little walking bassline and nice ric tone on that track.
any early kraan or helmut hattler's solo album-he used a ric then, that tone could not be mistaken for any other bass on the records, and it sounded fantastic.
run with the fox-chris squire

(squire's mapleglo 4001 deluxe on the yes album is a 21 fretter not 24.)
no rick ever sounded like the "radar love" sound that i'm aware of. it's danelectro all the way.

A Perfect Circle's "Weak And Powerless" featured a Ric when I saw it live, and the line is quite audible. On the other hand I don't know whether Jeordie White used a Ric to record it as well.
Nol Taylor knows a lot about Spacehog, I'm sorry I forgot them earlier and really glad you brought them up. I believe Arckid (related band) also uses a Ric way up front in the mix.teeder wrote:Lots of great suggestions here. I'm glad to see Josh recommend a "newer" tune with 'Sober" I would also like to put out "In The Meantime" by Spacehog. It's a pretty catchy bass line.

That's from the same Triple Play group I listed earlier.bassduke49 wrote:Of course, I had to include Chris Brubeck:

Starcastle's "Lady of the Lake" is pretty good. Gary Strater split his time between Rickenbacker and Alembic.

Martin Turner visited me when I was selling my '73 BG/ EPG a couple of years ago, and told me he has wanted another 4001 that colour, since his original was broken at the headstock, when being unloaded from a plane, at a European gig back in the day...bassduke49 wrote:Ooh, that video of Wishbone Ash doing "Vas Dis" has nice shots of a 21-fretter (Jetglo? So his was a Burg! It's tough to tell with the lights. Too bad it was destroyed. (But it does make mine a little more rare

Now that's odd, because the bass he's playing here looks kind of familiar....
