The Foo Fighters version is too dark and the melody is muddy.

Yeah, probably one of the most well known saxophone melody lines in a pop song. It really added to the song. I don't think it would have had the same effect with a lead guitar line playing the same melody. Saxophones were everywhere for a bit after that.
