Actually, it started the shedua strip in early '72 and at the same time(?) switched out the walnut head wings for maple and reshaped the headstock to the stockier (ouch  ) shape.
OK, I defer to the expert. Of course, "around '73" could include '72 when you're talking about nearly 40 years ago...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

Welcome Graham,
I too have a similar story... had a '78 MG 4001, sold it (at least not stolen!), and my mid life crisis purchase was another Mapleglo ('89 4003s). Enjoy your new purchase! I think you'll find this site very helpful and informative....I know I have.

It hasn't been mentioned here yet, but you might want to do the cap bypass mod...other's here will probably chime in. Do a search of the forum to see what i'm talking about and any good ric teck should be able to do it along with the setup if that's what you decide. :)

I'm also a '71 4001 owner. They are rare basses. Production numbers were low during that time. Does yours have 20 or 21 frets?
Of course, now you have to post pictures!
