The March issue of Vintage Guitar (on sale mid January) will include the first in a series of features marking 25 years of the magazine's publication. It kicks things off with the results of a VintageGuitar.com online poll to determine what readers think are the 25 coolest guitar-driven songs of the 1960s.

I think I might have put "Turn, Turn, Turn" ahead of "Mr. Tambourine Man." You still have that classic Byrds sound, and Roger got to stretch out a bit more. It isn't a difficult solo to play per se. It is challenging however to play it cleanly, and up to tempo all at once.

Walk Don't Run, Mr. Tambourine Man and You Really Got Me are all on the list.

The criteria for voting the tune in was that it be "guitar-driven."

AHDN, other than the distinctive opening chord, isn't so much guitar-driven, IMO. There are 4 Beatles tunes on the list; interesting choices.

I agree with Jim that Turn, Turn, Turn should have been ahead of MTM in the listing.

Each participant got to vote for 5 tunes. Here's how I voted, no more than one tune per group:

Certainly "Turn, Turn, Turn" should go ahead of "Mr.Tambourine Man", but I would put "Eight Miles High" ahead of both; it would be hard to imagine a more inventive guitar line or record for that matter.

I saw "Over Under Sideways Down" listed; great record but "Shapes of Things" and "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" are both more inventive with the guitar parts and as compositions.

Here's a quickie Top Ten list for me, very much off the top of my head and no particular order;

1. Wonderful World--Shadows
2. Eight Miles High--Byrds
3. Happenings Ten Years Time Ago--Yardbirds
4. Needles and Pins--Searchers
5. Buzz The Jerk--Pretty Things
6. Man Of The World--Fleetwood Mac (Peter Green would be my all time fave)

This has got to be somewhere in the Top 50....

A most memorable (for us older guys) riff that is 'economical' on par with 'Satisifaction', 'You Really Got Me', and Wipe-Out'.

I remember hearing this a boy as much as any Beatles, Stones, or Doors tune, but they were a 'one-hit wonder' so they get buried on lists like these.
