Modern Full Width Inlays

I remember reading somewhere about john hall talking about the shell and the place where they got them from but i cant remember if it was in this forum or the RIC site.

...Most of that shell material came from Kohamajima Island, Okinawa, which was turned into a protected marine reserve a number of years ago. A number of years ago I visited Ishigaki Island, which is the next island over from it in the Straits of Taiwan, to see if its abundant supplies of shell material could be utilized as a replacement but there were just too many hoops to jump through on that one.

I did some diving in the South China Sea there, between Kohamajima and Iriomote Island, and it was both interesting and frustrating to see so much fingerboard inlay material lying on the seafloor! Bu it's probably best that it stays there.

If you do happen to be a mollusc with a decorative internal wall to your "house", being immortalised in the neck of a Rickenbacker isn't a bad way to end up.

Full width or partial width - it doesn't really matter to me. My old 1994 jetglo 360 had partial width inlays, and my present 2009 mapleglo 360 has full width inlay. My '94 was a great guitar (I wish I hadn't been so stupid as to get rid of it), and so is my '09.

I had to buy my '90 JetGlo under the radar. Specifically, my girlfriend (now wife) and I secretly drove from Savannah to Atlanta to pick it up. (My dad would have killed me if he knew). I still have it and love it.

I am going to have PW do the full width inlays. (He's got my 360/12 and doing that now). I love both of these guitars but struggled with modifying them vs. getting the new style. Ended up going the modification route. They are both just too dear to me to retire.

Funny, because when I got my first JetGlo I worked to keep it clean and perfect... 20 years later, it's a work-a-day guitar. Same for the 12 string. Kinda nicked up but still great players...

Point of my reply post was that I agree with 360 Gal on not letting them go, once you get them. My first was a FireGlo from the '70's/'80's. Grover tuners... I let that go and have regretted it ever since.

For those few of you on here who have not met Kenny in person, he is actually, quite tall. Of course, standing next to me, everyone is tall... Except an Oompah Loompah.
