Facebook attempted hack

Yesterday afternoon someone clear across the country attempted to login to my facebook account. I tried to log in by cell phone and couldn't. They (facebook)denied me access until I could get to a computer. This morning I logged in to fb and jumped through hoops changed pass words etc. In light of other members recent troubles I figured I would join the chorus. It is still early in this and I'm waiting to see what else has trouble.

What is worrying is that more and more sites offer access through FB log-in.
I actually changed my email password recently, only to find out, I can access my email with my FB log-in...

EDIT: Ted, how did you actually find out it was someone from across the country? Did FB tell you that?

When I logged in to start the security process they told of the attempt and a goggle map came up with a location, someplace out in Washington. They referred to this as part of a phishing scam.

Just curious, Ted, was your old password something easy? I try to create weird ones and write them down in a little notebook I keep at home, say for example, 7sggHD37&%$er or something equally random, mixing lower/uppercase letters, numbers, and symbols. I'll actually write new ones down first, then type them in, since you have to enter them twice. (I'd never remember all that!!!)

I'm still quite annoyed that anyone who knows my yahoo emailaddie and FB password can actually use that data to use FB to log into my yahoo email

Ooh, this facebook thing is starting to get worrisome, I'm glad I dropped it a while ago. Facebook does seem to be quite invasive and seems to be getting into just about everything these days.

And yeah, many passwords are WAY too easy to figure out, and making up hard ones often leads to people writing them down, which is also not the most secure thing to do. I like to make up passwords based on the lyrics to a song or a quotation or such. Take the first letter of each word and make an acronym out of them. Change a few appropriate words to numerals or other characters too, "one" becomes '1', "to" becomes '2', "and" becomes '&'. For example, "You're living in your own private Idaho" could become "Yliy0pI" with the 'o' for own being a zero. Ends up pretty random, but I find these a lot easier to remember since I just have to remember the song..

It was easy and I've since made it more complex, it was in the US, Seatle area. Things are a little too linked I've changed pass words on a few things just to be safe, I hope.

It's really scary that Facebook hacks are becoming more common. I'm not sure what precipitates these incidents although I will share my Gmail got hacked into for a couple of hours once when I logged into it on a Windows XP SP3 machine at work. I had to change all my passwords, etc. I use a somewhat lengthy series of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols, kind of like what Jason said. I memorize them but have to write them down for the first week.

One thing for sure, I limit the information I post on Facebook. It's not a good place to share everything about yourself, for personal reasons and to protect yourself from identity theft.

I can't quit Facebook--my band just started a Page there and I am an admin. I see it as pretty key to marketing our efforts as we are fairly new to the scene. This is us by the way:

100% agreed. I figure, if someone breaks in and can get to the notebook, I've got bigger problems to deal with! And they'll have a hard time working a computer and putting pressure on their bullet wounds at the same time!
