Re: New Chris squire Bass arrived and theres a problem
Have you any idea what kind of strings came on the bass?
If I might make a suggestion, the factory Rickenbacker roundwounds are really nice- other than Roto 66's they are the only rounds I truly like, the .105 set. I got a set from the parts depot @ RIC and set up my '97 4003 with a bone nut and the strings- they are really nice, nice tension etc.

The part has been upgraded recently; not only was a new mold made, but the part was also completely CAD/CAM re-engineered to make it fit slightly better. The material was upgraded from ABS to a glass-filled acetal blend for more strength and lower resonance.
Holy ****. Mr Hall has responded to this thread.... This just gets better and better. Ok So when I went looking for it on the RIC site, I was looking for a pic (there wasnt one) or a description something like "Pickup base plate". The actual part description is BASE PICKUP COIL 4003 TREBLE. I would never have associated that description with what I actually need.

All in all, it sounds like you got a great bass for a great price. Congrats.
Santa brought me TWO basses this past Christmas. A '77 4001 AutumnGlo (my dream bass!), and an '85 4003 MG BT.
Both bought on 3bay.
Had them both set up yesterday by Jon Mouradian. Fortunately, NO surprises. Both are in fact Rics (and not fakers), and in really nice shape.
That said, I spent a couple hundred bucks (set-up costs and travel expenses) to make them right. Worth every dollar.
3bay can definitely be a crapshot. The last time I thought I bought an "AutumnGlo", it was a FireGlo, with photos taken in a dark bedroom against a dark bedspread. When I called the seller out on it, his response was: "you can send it back, but if it's damaged in transit then you're responsible for the cost."
I translated that to mean: "don't even think of trying to send it back". So I have great 4001 FG (a darker fireglo than most, according to RIC support when I called them and showed them the listing). Not really that much of a hardship.
IMHO, a CS in really nice shape for $3K that needs a $46 part is still a great score!

Watch those teeth, Marlin. I'm not sure we've properly sedated the beast . . .

He does stuff like that. Just one more reason why RIC is such a great company...bartyclue wrote:Holy ****. Mr Hall has responded to this thread....
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

I guess that's why we have the exploded view on our website of most assemblies, which shows you the parts along with the part SKU.

WOW!
If Mozart were with us today, he'd play a Fireglo 4001C64! ~~~*~~~ Beethoven, on the other hand, would play a Matte Jetglo 4001C64S!
Re: New Chris squire Bass arrived and theres a problem
Just a FYI for the new guys.
My CS arrived in 1995. I had to send it back to the factory for a little tweak months after I took ownership.
I waited most of my life for that bass and it was my first RIC. This was at a time before I was a member of ANY forum. I contacted customer service and was treated like gold. They were great.
I put a little note in the case, and asked that they PLEASE treat her with kit gloves.
It was a gift from my wife at a time when money was in VERY short supply.
Basically, saying "I know you guys see these every day, but I waited over 20 years for this baby."
The thought of it being out of my hands freaked me out.
They not only tended to the few issues, they polished it, put new strings on it, gave it a full setup, kept me updated and it's NEVER needed an adjustment from that day on. The neck is SO solid, the truss rod nuts are finger tight to this day.
THAT day, I became a RIC fan forever.

That is how I found this part number when I needed to order, and any other parts I don't readily see on the Boutique.johnhall wrote:bartyclue wrote:Holy ****. Mr Hall has responded to this thread.... Hey Tony, I've heard that there was one 4001CS that was going to automatically turn Jetglo after 16 years. What number is yours again? I'm positive it's yours!

JETGLO should officially be renamed JETGLO ROCKS!
Re: New Chris squire Bass arrived and theres a problem
Sounds like the end is win/win/win
Brian got the bass he loves...and while it wasn't perfect, he ended up getting the part he needed. As it turned out, this part is now being made better than ever. In the end, us forum dudes and dudettes have another CS to drool over.
Enjoy Brian!

Re: New Chris squire Bass arrived and theres a problem
This has by far been the most active thread that was started by me. I had a friend read it because some of the responses suggested (in my opinion) I was being a bit of a troublemaker. This certainly was not my intention. I have also had some people curious as to why the parts cost so much. I wish to clarify that I actually bought two of the base coil plates.I also bought new bolts and springs, and because I will gig with this bass, two strap locks to replace the standard strap bolts that are currently on it. My friend also suggested that I was also taking a shot at RIC's website because I couldn't find the part numbers that were suggested to me. Honestly I don't visit the official RIC site that much other than to buy strap locks and the occasional pickup, and had no idea those pdf's where there. I merely mentioned that it wasn't on the website because I thought every part that is available for order was listed in the boutique. I have been a Ric owner and player for almost 3 decades but have not delved into the history and nuts and bolts of these guitars until recently. I have learned a lot from some of you and obviously there is a lot more to go. (Lost is the day we do not learn something...)
And finally my friend said that it may have been perceived that I was grumbling about the seller and an intentional deception on his part. As I stated in the first post, this is the first time I have ever bought an instrument without physically seeing touching smelling etc.etc it before paying for it. I was very apprehensive given that this was for me at least a substantial amount of cash. I still stand by my assertion that someone had to be aware of the issue concerning this but as I stated earlier, the fix is relatively cheap and all will be well. Hopefully my parts arrive sooner rather than later because I still have not been able to play it. It's like being a kid on Christmas eve.....
