360/12 Spot On Setup and Tuning

Post by Folkie »

I got my first 360/12 from Pick of the Ricks two weeks ago, and Chris Clayton set up the guitar perfectly for my playing style. So far I've been keeping a Planet Waves Humidipak in the case, and, despite the dry winter air, the guitar setup is still spot on! Another thing I noticed, which amazed me. This time of year I have all kinds of problems keeping my old 330/12 in tune. The strings slip on their posts and the tuners just don't do their jobs. I can turn a knob for about five seconds before I hear a click and the string slips in place. But the new 360/12 stays in tune like a rock. I had it sitting in its case for two whole days, and when I picked it up again and connected it to a chromatic tuner, every single string was exactly in tune! It holds its tuning better than any six-string guitar I've ever owned, including my Stratocaster and my Guild jazz box. So don't let anyone tell you about tuning problems with Rick 12's. When properly set up at concert pitch, they really do stay in tune.

The "click" or "ping" is usually binding at the nut. Either a widening of the nut slot or some lube at the nut should resolve this.

Thanks for the advice. I'm glad there's a simple solution.

Yes, the nut lube can be as simple as the point of a graphite pencil rubbed through the slot.
