Okay, obviously bassist John Taylor is playing a gorgeous Rick 4001 in the video. To my ear, the bass on the track has always sounded like a Rick, but Taylor played a number of basses in the early days. Anyone else think the actual bass track is a Rick? It sounds like it has the right "growl" to me.

Here's a Bass Player article saying he likely used an Aria Pro600. I know the Pro1000 was an active model Cliff Burton was playing later in his career (after his modded Rick). Not sure if the 600 was active or passive. From what I've heard, some of those Aria's from the 80's are nice players. I'd like to find a lefty one day, for backup of course.

Cool! Thanks, John. When I played a 4001 in the early 80s I was first influenced by Bruce Foxton of the Jam, but I was also really into the way John Taylor played bass and used to try and incorporate a lot of his style into my playing as well. I loved Chic, of course.

If Mr. Taylor owned a Rickenbacker bass, he probably used it on some studio work. I can't get enough of John Taylor's distinct sound, by way of Chic, courtesy of Rickenbacker, Aria and B.C.Rich Seagull basses! New wave 80s music isn't everyone flavor, but it blended well with the rock/alt sound!
