Cool vid but I wish Gillan had sang in the same key as the rest...

Glover is #1 in my book. This particular solo isn't brilliant, but at least the bass is heard clearly in the mix, and it's as Ric-ish as it gets.

The camera work on that entire DVD is pretty bad. They didn't get that they were supposed to focus on the soloist during his solo.
Must have been a monitor problem for Gillian to be that off. He's certainly better than that.
Glover's 4001 could only have been several months old at that point.
There are so few vids of this incarnation of Purple out there that this has to suffice. Still fun to watch

Don't know how many know this, but Ian Gillan was the voice of Jesus in the original recording of Jesus Christ Superstar. Did a great job on that, and I suspect the monitor (did they even have them?) problem, too, Bill.

That was pretty standard back then to focus on someone's nose while someone else was soloing. Boobs!

Yes, this DVD is some of, if not the only, live footage from Mark II (including the Hofstra footage from spring '73, which is also on the DVD).

Glover has a great moment in one of the encores, Lucille, where he rips out a nice hammered-on then descending lick to bring the band back in near the end.

I still haven't been able to figure out if Glover had two 4001s. The Jazz bass pickup mod was allegedly done on a FG, but I've only ever seen pictures of him with the JG. The FG is on a website where the guy who did the mods says a few words and the picture is of a FG. There's a thread in Rickenbacker Artists that I started about a year ago on this, but it never got resolved.

when my cousin from conn. moved to canada near me, he brought along his jesus christ superstar record. we loved it ! he played the pillows and i played the yardstick when we acted out all the parts. this was 1973.

in 1984 at the mapleleaf gardens, the monitors were screaming feedback and gillan kept throwing the mic into them or the sidefills...i suspect the band was very loud on stage and the poor soundman had to try to cope.

I wrote earlier in that Rickenbacker Artists thread, that Glover handed the FireGlo 4001 ,after mod with two slanted J-Bass PUs like on his Jetglo 4001, to Pete Agnew from Nazareth, when Glover was the producer of Nazareth (about 1973-1975).

Yes, I remember that post Peter. However, there isn't one picture I can remember seeing that showed Glover with a FG 4001 with or without the mod. The website I referred to, http://www.dawksound.com/bass.html depicts a FG bass with absolutely no mention of the bass everyone identifes with Glover from that period: a JG.

Doesn't it seem odd that a luthier would talk about and post pictures of a bass that practially no one had ever known belonged to Glover in light of an identical modification that was also done to the bass that practically everyone identified with Glover with no mention of the JG? Who modified the JG?

I understand you posted some information, but things are still not clear to me.
