In my ignorance, when I owned two 77 4001 basses I would install any strings I liked. Dean Markley, Rotosound, GHS, SIT rounds or TI, Chrome and Fender flats. The necks always setup with no problem. Nice and strait with low action. Guess I was just lucky. As for the 115 B string, I would think that size would intonate better than a 125.
It's too early in the morning to talk about our relationship !

If you have the D'Addario ECB82 XL Chromes set on your '71 4001 right now and the neck is fine, you'll have no problems with the roundwound sets that RIC offers. The roundwounds sets that RIC offers, have less tension than the Chromes you have installed now.

A simple modification to the B string saddle allows greater travel so it will intonate with a .125 string.

If there is a Rick string set available at closeout that fits your playing style, I highly recommend purchasing a set; RIC has only the best, consistent quality strings made for their instruments. That's all I'll say about that, other than I wish one of the sets was a light 12 string set; I know it's relatively unorthodox, but I like to do some mean bends on my 12, and I can only do so many fingertip pushups for extra strength when bending two strings at once  . :)

aceonbass wrote:My research over the years had led me to conclude that the old style truss rod system was pretty happy with about 160 lbs of tension. Some obviously take more, and from what I've seen and heard Chris Squire's bass is NOT one of them. D'Addario EXL 170's fit those specs, and also have the perfect amount of "bounce" for me too, so that's what I use on my '88 4003. I find the EXL 170-5's perfect for my 5 string 4004 conversions, which have about another 32 lbs of tension. A set of Roto Swing Bass strings is around 200 lbs, and way too much for many of the old necks.
Dane, are you talking about the 45-105 Rotos? I've used the 40-95 for years and have never had a problem. FWIW I prefer the sound of lighter lower strings; 125 is my absolute limit on a B.

Rotosound did not offer the set in the gauges of the 40-95 back in the '70's. If they did, I never saw them offerer for sale. Those came around in the 80's, about the time Geddy Lee started using the Steinberger. Geddy was one of the bassists using that set. I'm sure Dane is referring to the same set that I mentioned, the Swing Bass RS-66 set with .045 to .105 being the string gauges.

So . . . get a couple of those 95101 sets, which are 8 to 38's, and make 12 string sets. You could buy almost 4 sets of those at $4 each and have a bunch of spare strings, as compared to $15 for the standard 12 string sets.

Also...does this mean the return of RIC flat wounds!? Now THAT I'll stay tuned for!
No flats for the moment, but the balanced strings are hex core and are especially accurate with regard to equal tension across all strings. Quite frankly, this set is being offered more for non-Rickenbacker basses and is an entry into the "mainstream" string market.
Well, I'll keep my fingers crossed for RIC flats in the future. It doesn't sound like they've been completely ruled out! :D

Maybe I'll give one of the new sets a shot on my Carvin!

Oh, I know it, and I've tried several of them! I would just love it if RIC would start branding flats again, made somewhat to the specs of the old ones (Maximas, were they?).

I know I'm part of a small (but growing and passionate) niche on this one, but those of us looking to capture that 60's tone and vibe would love to see these!

The TI Jazz Flat 344's are heavenly on my '73. I have TIs on 9 Hofners and 4 Fenders too. They're that good!

NOS RIC flats (Maxima) are pretty heavenly too. I just pulled out the 2004 with them on and fell in love all over again.
