"The cap"

Post by bassduke49 »

Somebody save me from hours of digging, please. The .0047mfd cap is:

1. Wired between what components?
2. Was discontinued on standard Rick basses when?
3. Was not in the 4001V63?
4. Was in the 4001C64?
5. Was in the 4001C64S?

Well, according to the schematic on the RIC site:
http://www.rickenbacker.com/pdfs/19507.pdf
It's placed between the treble volume pot (center leg) and the switch. This is how it looks on my '84 4003:

I don't know about your other questions...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

A related question, just to have the info in one thread:

Does engaging or disengaging the cap cut the lows? ANother way to ask this would be with the puch/pull knob up, you get the 4001 tone. Is the cap engaged by pulling up on the knob?

Sorry, I realize this has been asked and answered.
Can we have everything louder than everything else?

Hard to see the cap in your photo, CJ. It's hiding under a wire!

My '92 V63 and '98 V63 had no cap. And the first V63's were made right around the same time that the cap was discontinued, so my guess is that very few if any V63's had one.

I know that some people have actually installed the cap on their V63's  (This means you, Jeffrey Scott! 8) ), but I'm just talking about how they left the factory.

My 2003 C64S has the cap (which I promptly bypassed).

Yes John. Engaging the cap (pulling the push/pull) cuts the lows.

Yes John. Engaging the cap (pulling the push/pull) cuts the lows.
I would add that it boosts mids, in blend mode. The cap cuts lows by blocking them from passing "through" it below a hinge frequency. It *also* changes the phase by 90 degrees for the treble pickup. When the two pickups are in the same (parallel) phase they will do comb filtering that scoops the sound a bit, like a Fender Jazz. When the cap is engaged this can't take place and the tone flattens out, but you perceive it as an increase in mids. Same thing happens if you roll back one volume pot a tiny bit.

Hours of digging? :?
I know of a website that has this info. Three websites actually. Finding the info would use just a few minutes of effort.

And RRF is one of them. :) I figure that everyone who helps with the project will be able to appreciate the "effort" that we put into it. Also, I find it worth the "effort" to check several sources to get the full and correct information.

Also, Joey, the links to the pdfs of your wiring diagrams on JBN aren't working, except for the 4004 VVT diagram. Don't know if it's just me. Tried both Safari and Firefox and got: "Error 404: NOT FOUND!Your browser cannot find the document corresponding to the URL you typed in." Same goes for the links "Standard Bass Maintaince" (sic) and "Other Notes."

There are several mass info type websites with links to my wiring diagrams and pages of my site that make it seem that the content is part of their own website. They have done this without my permission and I'm not happy about it. For a while, I had left the bare minimum up. As of a few minutes before this post, I have taken all of the content off line until I can get around this which will be a bit of effort on my part. I'll also have to come up with some kind of, "Terms Of Website Use" rule.

Joey, there are a couple lines of code that you can add to your site that will block hotlinking. PM if you need/want help.

Thanks Todd, appreciate the help. I'll send you a PM. I don't mean to block links from forums or other sites that I have agreed to have links swaps, just the generic mass info sites.

I have some lines of configuration in my apache config to block certain specific sites. This will probably work in an .htaccess as well.

Physically the inline cap is between the switch and treble volume pot, as cjj said.
Electronically it’s between the treble pickup and treble volume pot, but after the treble tone cap+pot has done its job.
PU >> tone cap+pot >> inline cap >> vol pot >> output
If the order is changed, like have the inline cap before the tone cap has done it's job, or after the vol pot, it will all work differently.
In standard Rick wiring the switch is placed before the inline cap, after the tone cap, keeping both volume pots in circuit all the time, even when switched to a single pickup.

The C Series has the cap. The V series did not. Discontinued around 1986/7 but you'll have to dig to nail it further.
